hello everyone, i have knives i already use, currently i use a benchmade afck, and a delica for all my chores..But now i want a really great knife that i can just look at, and craze over-it will not be used-well maybe, but i dont know if i would use such an expensive knife(socom)..Please give me your opinions on the Microtech SOCOM, i will be getting either the TANTO plain blade, or with a black coating on the blade-which do you recomend, and will that black coating come off just bye touching it alot-like benchmades BT2 coating does.
I specifically want opinions, and your experiances with the socom, does the knife suck, is it good, how does the liner lock hold up to wear, etc.. I heard that the lock fails horribly from some..yet i heard it is the strongest bye others??? please, give me the info, thanks, btw, im new here, and hello to all..!!

Hey Snakecharmer, I, for one, love the Socoms. The tanto isn't really my cup of tea, as I prefer the clip point style, but the knife is just about perfect ergonomically speaking, IMHO. I like the way it rides in the pocket, and I think it is just about the fastest knife to draw and open that I have owned.

I would definitely get the black ti coated blade. It will show signs of wear eventually, but it is MUCH tougher than the teflon coating BM uses. I carried a Socom for a couple months and ended up selling it to a coworker, and the coating still looked perfect.

You will get many different opinions on the lock. It locks up solid, with no blade play at all. But, in my trials, the lock did end up giving up the ghost with a healthy whack on a table edge. Wasn't that big of deal to me though, as I don't use them extremely hard. Might be to yourself and others though.

I think it is a great knife, and if you look around you can get a decent deal on them. I would highly recommend it. It is about the only useable, realisticly sized folder that Microtech currently makes. You can't beat MT's production level quality. You DO have to pay for it though! :-)

i agree with superman (you aren't the real one, aren't you?

The SOCOM m/a silver serrated clip point is the one I have choosen for my everyday carry and use knife. I have beat the crap out of this knife but not to the point of abuse. It has held up quite well to salt water (i fish alot) and all the elements that one would go through in a florida swamp during three hunting seasons. The 154-cm keeps a great blade and the handle size is a great fit. As far as the liner lock goes I have never had mine fail on me nor have I ever seen one fail with my own eyes. Thanks ! Hello!

Here's my 0.7 cents of worth(??)i have a MT Socom DA tanto point.

Haven't used very much, but i do love it!
Just too hard, for me that is, to replace it. otherwise i would have used it a lot more, for now i use my Emerson Commander, very good knife, but if i could get a new MT Socom easier i'll use that one, VERY kewl looks and VERY good ergonomics(at least for my hands)

Get one! i don't think you'll be disssapointed.

Take care and be well!/Jonas aka 2Sharp

like 2 sharp ,i also have Socom Da. Solid lockup, great steel, big blade, and nice fit in the hand. Not a cheap knife, but a great knife.

I carry a Stryker full size now, nearly everyday. I recently purchased the same piece you speak of; DA SOCOM BLACK TANTO SEMI SERRATED-FOR A GRREAT PRICE...my stryker with shippeing cost me more.

This is truly a piece to look at, maybe check my post when i got it, it is here somewhere...only problem being it is too big and to pretty to use everyday.

I tried a fighting test with the SOCOM, my Stykers (M2 and ATS34) and for base line a Wayne Goddard "lite." Thru both front and rear material-including pocket, of a pair of jeans with one slash!!! The socom was SOOO sharp right out of the box. Goddard did well for a $40 knife!

Only advice...w/small hands, try the mini, you can even pick colors if it suits ya!

I would rec'mnd drop point over tanto for use, or tanto to look at...mean looking tool!
