Is the Pygmy Warrior over priced?

I just got my Spyderco Catalogue the other day and I was amused to see that the Pygmy was not described as a "new" item . Perhaps this is because the Pygmy ,in theory, was released in 2012. However ,in the new catalogue, the Pygmy shown, is still described as a prototype model and no sheath is shown. Will the Pygmy ever be released?
I was also surprised by the price tag for the Pygmy ,which at 300 smackers ,equals that of the Szabo. I find it hard to beleive that a small fixed blade would be as expensive to make as a large folder with a blade close in size to that of the Pygmy.
I know that the Pygmy was made in the US [as a Canadian, this fact does not make me do any patriotic backflips]so if this is the reason for the high pice tag ,I wish it had been made in Taiwan like my Szabo which doesn't strike me as being too shabbily made at all.
[by contrast the new Street Bowie is $150 which strikes me as pretty reasonable and may be my purchase ,when it comes out, in lieu of the Pygmy]

I'm also more interested in the Perrin Bowie. Not just because the price is more compelling. I prefer the design.

I'm disappointed with their inability to bring it to market in a timely fashion. Horsecrap!

Are you confusing the MSRP with the actual retail price? It sounds like it.

No,I'm aware that the actual price will be considerably lower- I paid 200 Canadian for my Szabo- so if the actual pricing on the Pygmy follows suit, it will also sell for about $200.
I still find it odd that the Pygmy, for the reason I gave above, would not be less expensive than the Szabo.
I've been wanting the Pygmy ever since I saw the first photo [I already have the Warrior] ,so I may still buy it at $200 but it'll have to be a special occasion like my birthday or something.

The price of a given knife doean't only depend on materials. If there is a collaborative effort included, the original designer must be compensated, some materials cost a lot more to process than others, wait times for material acquisition must also be taken into account, manufacturers also charge arying rates, then you have the dealers that want to make some profit. Hard to say why the price is what it is. A good example would be the Terzuola Starmate collaboration, it was a few bucks more than the newer Lum Tanto.

I've seen it listed at $183 at some dealers.

Hi Larry,

Our prices are based on our costs. Margins are relatively similar on all models. The Pygmy is not a cheap knife to buld. The serrations on the spine have their challenges, the knife is made in Golden, the sheath is Boltaron. Royalties to the designer, etc.

If the market won't support the model, then we generally disco. This knife was specifically made to be able to have a military person be able to purchase it, but still have a good reliable performance.

Whether either of those knives, or any other knife for that matter, is worth the asking price is something each buyer has to decide for himself. While it's not a knife I'd buy regardless of price, the MSRP is $100 less than it's big brother so, even given the differences in steel and manufacturing location, the pricing seems logically consistent to me.

If you check the pictures of the Pygmy, the serrations are more teeth than serrations (at the designers insistence), which aid in trapping and also are harder to manufacture, as well as build a suitable sheath for. Would you rather have it produced quickly over a quality build? I'm definitely in for the Pygmy and have no problem waiting for it to be done right. Not worried about price - it is a purpose built design.

Well my whining got a response from Sal himself ! That's pretty cool. Despite my complaining I will buy the Pygmy at some point even if I have to wait until next Christmas. I want to do my little bit to encourage Spyderco to continue to bring out knives like the Warrior ,the Pygmy, the Szabo, the Street Bowie and, hopefully in the not too distant future, a Warrior folder.
I know there's a huge number of fans of Spyderco's smaller knives who probably aren't into the type of knives I've listed above.

I definitely don't mind Spyderco taking their time to perfect the design, it's got to take the time it takes. It's just been a while since I heard anything concrete about it, so I was beginning to worry a little. Really great to hear that the project is still in the works and on it's way.
