I am looking to get a new knife for camping and general use. I saw the Smith & Wesson Border Guard 3 Serrated. I want to ask if it is any good or if it is worthless, will break, stuff like that. Thanks

Don't confuse the Smith and Wesson knives with the proud American firearms company with that name. The knives made under that name are produced cheaply in China for another company, Taylor Cutlery, who licensed the use of the name.

For an inexpensive folding knife of good quality, and, most importantly, safety, look at Byrd (a Spyderco line), Kershaw, Buck, the Rat folder, and the Ka-Bar Dozier folder. Buy a cheap knife by a company of suspect quality, and not only will you get a knife that won't hold an edge or stay together, but the lock cannot be trusted, and it's quite possibly that serious permanent injury could occur.

Agree, the S&W line should not be a consideration, and the Ka-Bar Dozier would be my first choice for an el cheapo.

I would also like to give the advice to stay away from S&W knives. Spyderco has a great cheap line-up with good quality knives for a low price (Tenacious en Resilience). The steel used in the S&W knife is comparable to 440A steel which is not considered a good or even decent knife steel. The steel is also rather soft after hardening in the Rc 55 range, comparable to the hardness of an axe head. This means the blade will need to be sharpenend very often, and might not be able to cut well or dull quickly in a situation where it is needed. ( as in a tactical situation seeing that the knife you mention is a "tactical" knife)
