Can some one tell me if this knife is illegal in canada, this is the law.

(a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or

(b) any weapon, other than a firearm, that is prescribed to be a prohibited weapon;

SOG S.A.T. folders do not open by gravity or centrifugal force and it also can't be opened by pressing a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle. Therefore I would tend to believe they are legal, but I am no expert on canadian law and there may also be local laws prohibiting such knives. Also some cops may consider it a switchblade even though they most likely are mistaken. As long as you don't do something stupid such as flip it in someones face I think you will be fine.;)

I too am no Canadian law expert but most countries do not allow daggers and blades more than 6 inches, though US allows this. The Trident is not a switchblade!!!

SOG uses S.A.T, which means you press a button to open the blade slightly , then you flick your wrist to fully open the blade right?

Is this the same for the Arc-lock? :confused:

No, you do not push any button, what you push on is essentially an extension of the blade, e.g. A thumbstud or blade "kick". After you push on this extension there is no need to flick your wrist, the S.A.T. will do all the rest on it's own. :)

We receive many orders from Canadians for the SOG Trident. It technically is not illegal but we did have a few shipments confiscated by Canadian Customs officials. The rule is that if three customs agents can flip open the blade with no resistance then it is considered illegal. However, this test seems to be performed randomly. We have also noticed that shipping US Priority or Express Mail decreases the likelihood that the knife will be confiscated.

Hope this helps you out.

We have worked closely with Canadian customs to get a ruling on our S.A.T. knives and legally importing them into Canada. I can tell you that we did receive a favorable ruling early this year and all of our current S.A.T. knives including the SOG Trident have been approved for sale in Canada. I had to dig around on my desk but I was able to find a copy of the ruling. I hope this helps you out.

A copy of the ruling can be downloaded from here SOG Canadian Customs Letter
