Is the Spyderco Stretch in VG-10 being discontinued?

The new one in zdp189 with the g10 scales will be quite the knife.. but I agree that it's a real shame the vg10 version is being discontinued, I would have thought it is a well selling model and should become a staple in the line..

Fret not...It is being disco'd to make room for the updated Stretch2. Let me expand on that...

Before they commit to an expensive FRN mold, they will try out the new design in G10 form (the brown G10 ZDP) and get feedback from US. Once everything (the improved choil) checks out, it's a for sure bet that an FRN/VG10 Stretch2 will come next. All this coming from Sal.

Even though it is disco'd, it will be easy to find new for the time being, and used for years to come. Also, the ZDP189 FRN version is still in the 2015 lineup.

I thought the current iteration of the stretch was the 'Stretch 2.' ?

It is. Funny you ask because before I posted, I second guessed myself on whether or not it is and I checked Spyderco's site and it only says Stretch so I went with that.

You know what I mean though. Ok Stretch3.

That's relieving news. In the mean time I guess I'll try and snatch up the current (old?) Stretch :)

Will it be possible to blade swap a current gen vg10 blade onto the upcoming g10 scales?

That's the bees knees to me.

I have nothing of substance to add. Only that I recently aquired an FRN Stretch in a trade and that thing is a cutting machine. I will probably hang onto that one.

I could be wrong, but based on my observations when I had a chance to "test drive" the G-10 prototype for a couple weeks back in June, I severely doubt it. The whole tang end of the blade seemed a bit different but, at the very least, the difference in the shape of the choils would make it look odd.

The new Stretch is a sweet-looking knife. I really like the newer choil and wider blade profile. But I also really like VG10. For my uses and purposes, ZDP doesn't offer any significant improvements. May have to mull this a while before considering a purchase.

I like the Stretch 2 updates, but am not a big fan of brown g10. May have to wait for it to come out in FRN.

I do not like the brown either but MANY seem to. I said as much months ago and Sal responded that he doesn't like brown either (lol), but the management team wanted/needed variety which I understand. He also said that a CF version is very possible so I'll look out for that...and the FRN's of course.

I'm not a fan of peel-ply G-10, regardless of color. OTOH, the new Stretch will be all screw construction with full liners and a steel backspacer, so I'm figuring it should be fairly easy finding someone to make new scales for it.

Tbh I think what would hold me back more from buying a new Stretch would be my growing appreciation for the Delica. That little knife is so light in the pocket, yet comfortable and useful in hand its hard to find pocket time for anything else! I do love the Stretch though, looking forward to more pics and thoughts on the new design. A new Stretch 2 vs. a ZDP Delica? whew that will be a tough choice in 2015!

Part in red. It may just be me but I like screws over pins in my single bladed folders.
