Is the Spyderco thumb hole unsafe?

I normally clip my Spyderco into my back pocket and on occasion I'll drop my keys in the same pocket as I did yesterday butthis time when I tried to pull out my keys one of the keys "caught" the thumb hole and nearly cut my finger.

I already cut my finger with a similar mishap about 2 years ago and learned that if I carry a spyderco in a pocket or clipped in a pocket I have to be very aware of what else I put in that pocket and how I pull it out. I'm very careful but as I have experienced the big thumb hole will eventually catch something and open the knife blade.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Had the same thing with Benchmades, CRKs all sorts of liner locks will open in your pocket, especially if you haven't fed them recently - sometimes they will even try to cut their way out ouf your jeans, as I found once

Not a special spyderco thing, and a light leather slipcase or moulded kydex cap can sort it all out :)

The hole is no more/less safe than any other one-handed opening method. The same thing could easily happen with a stud, disk, wave, etc.

You can't really blame the tool for being unsafe when, what really happened, is that you knowingly carried it in an unsafe manner.

Can't say that I've had anything like that happen to me...

I had a Tenacious open in my pocket a couple times, but as far as I could tell it was just because the blade retention was so bad that it could just fall open if I wasn't careful. I switched the clip position so the spine of the knife was tucked against the hem of my pocket (tip down? tip up? I still haven't figured out the difference, lol), which fixed the problem, and I haven't had that problem with any other knife.

It's no more unsafe than putting any other knife with thumbstuds and having the key ring catch on that. Or putting an OTF auto in your pocket with keys and the blade is sliding in and out of the handle. I use the clips that knvies come with, if that is not an option I use a small Case trapper.

EDIT: Dang, you beat me to it JAB!

Nope, but I don't keep keys in the same pocket. Flashlight, pens, etc. but not keys.

I have, however, been cut by the thumbstuds on another company's knife...

I prefer my blades tip up with the blade against the side of the pocket for this reason. It can't open, and even if it does I'm unlikely to reach between my knife and the side of the pocket.

Do the carry tip down? You might want to consider doing a little flip-flop if so

Too much common sense going on here.

this is why I like to carry in my back right pocket.

Luckily, my wallet(Big Skinny) is slim enough to allow this!

Yes, the Spdeco's spyderhole is inherently unsafe, and make you a danger to yourelf and others.
I suggest you ship it and any other Spyderco or sharp object, for that matter) to me immediately, so I can contain it properly and keep others safe from this violent and dangerous thumbhole.,

Just trying to do my duty for society.

That's what sucks about the Military but you have no option unless someone mods it tip-up carry. Does anyone do that here on the forum - Mod the military for tip-up and do a nice job. Thing scares me tip down.

My experience has demonstrated the Spyderco system as being the safest of them all. I have had every other system open up on me, with the curious exception of Kershaw's assisted opening Speedsafe.

I really thought you were kidding when I read your post. But I suppose thats just because thats never happened to me. Probably because I carry with the spine of the knife pressed against the pocket seam usually. But even before I set everything up like that, what you're describing never happened. Might need to tighten your pivots.

I've discovered things along the way from carrying a knife for the past 25-30 years.

1- I carry my knives with a tight pivot. I can open it, but some people just cuss me when they try to open it!:D

2- I carry my main knife in my right hand pocket with nothing else in that pocket.

3- Change, my 2nd knife (a slipjoint), and pill holder, goes into my left fron pocket.

4- My keys are on a secure carabiner that I clip to a belt loop on the left side.

5- I constantly pat my pocket to make sure that my knife is still there and would be instantly aware if it were partially out of my pocket, or partially opened. I also carry my edc knives with deep carry clips that place the entire knife down into my pocket so that it would not be as easy to get snagged and open IF by some chance I had something else in that pocket.

These are the things I've learned along the way, and for that reason I've not had any mishaps with my knives.
