Is the Surge worth the extra?

Hey guys, I normally post over in W&SS but my question is more MT related, I have a quandary, my leatherman supertool has bit the dust (broke the saw off completely), I sent the tool back and they have said they'll replace it with a Core or try to put a supertool together out of part from others warranty returns.(Not sure about this option..)

Should I got with the Core or pay the difference and upgrade to a Surge?

I will never give up on my SUPERTOOL, I'm sure that Leatherman will do a great job putting toghether a SUPERTOOL with warranty returns.

The Core will be my second option in Black oxide finish.

A Super Tool was my daily companion for the better part of nine years. Although remaining very fond of it, I believe the Core is a better tool. Blades and implements are easier to access and unlock, both really appreciated when your hands are cold and/or wet. The other differences are minor, but mostly improve on the original, IMHO. I don't know much about the Surge, others can advise.

The Surge is a very nice tool and I wouldn't give mine up. However, I personally find the Core a tougher, more rugged tool. If you want "cool", get the Surge...for toughness, go with the Core. By the way, I've carried a Core for two years, retireing the Surge after two weeks on the job (the screwdriver bit spring fell out).

I carried a Supertool 200 for work for a few years. Loved it, it took everything I threw at it. Couldn't find it one day and carried the Surge. Surge never left the belt.

The thing that I love about it is the ability to access tools without having to open it up. The knives were used all the time. The ability to use t-shanked blades is great. I've cut locks from doors, drywall, wood, plastic all with different blades. In also love the toughness of it, I used it lever up lateral files in offices so that I could level them off.

What I don't like about it: is the bit holder, I never really torque on it because it seemed weak to me and I thought I was going to break it. The eyeglasses screwdriver bit, I have never used it and don't think I ever will and IMHO should be replaced with a phillips head screwdriver.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I've been EDC'ing a Surge for a little over two years.

It is a damn tough tool.

I was going to replace it with a Paladin PT-540, but decided not to at this time.

I do recommend the Surge for a heavy duty EDC.

IMHO, hell yea. I own a few other Leatherman tools (Super Tool, Kick, Mini-Tool) and a couple of Gerbers (Diesel and 600) and a handful of various and sundry knock-offs from Winchester, Sheffield and the like, but the Surge is the one I opt to carry all the time. It's a little more expensive and bulkier, but it suits all the needs of a few of the other tools combined. I have retired most of the others to the tool and tackle boxes and vehicle, places like that, but the Surge is on my belt all day every day...
