Is the wave worth it?

How many of you find the wave extremely useful? I'm torn between the CQC7B with the wave and the mini-cqc7. I'll carry the larger if the wave feature is worth it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Red,

I just got my 1st emerson the other day and it has the Wave, I think its great, its lighting fast and comes in handy when you neeed to cust something in a hurry. But i dont use it all the time cuz after a period of time im sure it would damage the knife somehow. I think you should go with it. Defienetly:D

Red,

The Wave is a very clever feature. If you are really in a hurry, then you have an advantage because of it.

I am not sure whether waving a knife open will damage it in the end. These knives have been designed with this feature in mind. Besides that, just try this: 1. Open the knife hard with the Wave and take a look at the point the liner engages the tang of the blade. 2. Open the knife hard using the thumb disk. Don't perform a wrist flick, but just keep on pushing the thumb disk real hard. You would think that the force you apply with doing so would be the same as when you wave the knife open. But just look at the position of the liner. With all of my Emersons, the liner engages before the center of the blade when I use the Wave. When using the thumb disk real hard, it travels further. Nothing to worry about, just an observation.

My conclusion therefore is that using the Wave doesn't put that many energy into the knife compared to a real hard thumb disk opening.

Is it worth it? Put the coolness factor aside for a moment and ask yourself is it worth the extra money for the bigger knife with the Wave. Also ask yourself do you intend for this knife to have the possibility of being a self defense knife at any given point. If there is a chance that this may be a self defense knife then I would say yes and get the bigger CQC7. If the knife will be only used as a tool then put the coolness factor aside and buy the mini.

Well it depends, is money really tight or is it not biggy?? if its no problem then get the bigger CQC7, its only a few more bucks and your getting a bigger cutting tool and a much more faster opening blade. go for it. its 100% worth it. Trust me ;), its sort of like having both a self defense weapon and just a regular cutting tool, for the few extra bucks why not have both??.

imho waving an EKI open wont hurt it. and after ya try the wave, you will never ask if its worth it again, i was a skeptic myself at first, thought it was a gimmick.

i was very wrong

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with the bigger CQC7. How durable is the the black Ti finish?

Once you`ve Waved there`s no turning back.Is the wave worth it absolutely! :)

The wave is way usefull. In a self defense knife nothing beats the speed of my Commander. It truely is faster than an auto.

Once you get the wave down, you can challenge friends to try and draw their folder of choice faster than you can draw your waved Emerson. No one has beat me yet at work

I usually carried my Spyderco Military for EDC, which can hold its' own in rapid deployment. However, it comes in second only to the Wave on my Commander.

For lightning quick deployment, NOTHING beats the Wave. ;) :D

(except maybe a fixed blade ....)

any finish on a knife will show scuffs/etc if ya use the thing, i carry my better stuff as SD knife and carry a spydie delica SE for cutting boxes/etc.

The wave is great. Love that satisfying 'click' as it pops out at lightning speed.

Just don't expect the pockets on your pants to last too long!

I must be doin' something right because I've been carrying a Super Commander for awhile and have not seen any wear to my pockets. I wear bdus, jeans and sweats for the most part and the wave works fine without damaging any of the material. Waving is kind of a finesse move, it doesn't rely on strength. If you're ripping your clothes up your tryin' way to hard.

I can do about 50-60 openings on my khaki pants and then they show siginificant wear and tear.

On jeans I can do a lot more openings but I find the wave works better with khakis.

IMO, sure it's worth it. It's faster than any auto or bali.

And yes, it does take a bit of practice to deploy the blade with minimum effort. Your pocket will start to show wear eventually, despite your expertise and the type of pants you wear.

From my experience, the Wave is much faster opening than any other manual knife I have handled. I haven't handled many autos, but I don't think they are much faster than maual one-handers anyway. BUT, getting fast with the Wave takes practice. For quite a while after I got my Commander('98:D ), I would only get the blade partially opened, especially when trying to do it quickly. My bottom line? Get one with the Wave and practice, practice, practice.
