Just received a CRKT Point Guard, Kasper Folder, and a small Urban Shark. Is there a better value out there than CRKT knives? I'd love to know where.

I agree with you and I don't even own one yet. I'll probably pick up one of the Kaspers eventually.

I have seen knives in the 200-500 dollar range that do not measure up to the CRKT lineup. Also you might want to check out GIGAND, they are another "Wonder Knife" made in Taiwan......Taiwan is really shaking things up in the high-quality production knife scene !!!

Jumbi: as you live in K-town have you ever visited that huge knife shop out off I-40 by sevierville ??? it's like exit 407 i think.

rickmos:
You are , of course, referring to the "Smokey Mountain Knifeworks" that's situated on the edge of Pigeon Forge (Sevierville, Exit 407

). The biggest cllection of pocket knives, e.g., Case, Shrade, etc. I have ever seen as well as every other type you can think of. Take a lunch and spend the day browsing

They don't carry Benchmade; is that a plus or a negative

???

I own two benchmades...a model 9050 auto and a Nimravus. went out the other day to buy another one but the shop that carries bm did not have the one(s) that i was interested in. I'm a trucker so the next time I get a trip out that way am definately going to stop by, WITH money this time. Going to be looking for Klotzkis, Bokers, maybe a Strider, anything cool...carbon fiber, exotic steels a plus. I like the pictures and write-ups that i have seen on the Microtechs but have heard some negatives on their Quality control. Same thing with MOD.

What do you guys think about Spyderco's Wayne Goddard Lightweight folder. Spyderco quality, ATS-55 steel and you can find them for less than 50 bucks.

CRKT's folders definitely look solidly constructed, but I wish they would do away with the AUS-6 blade steel.

Bronco: that knife is on my wish list, along with the Wegner....can never seem to find them in stock anywhere tho'.....if i do find them it is usually the 50/50 edge and i'm only buying plain edges. does anyone have a knife with ATS-55 ? any comments ?

Two come in my mind that are hard to beat: Spyderco Calypso jr ltwt (vg-10) and Native(S60V = CPM440V). Both are light weight lock backs - some might think that they are not comparable but as knives they excel.

ATS-55 is good steel - edgeholding better than in aus-8, alot better than in aus-6. Gets about as sharp as aus-8. VG-10 and S60V are better(in edgeholding and marginally in shapness) IMO. See steel faq.

The best value I have seen in a knife is in fact a handmade one. I picked up a Ken Largin (Kelgin) bird and trout for $40. This model had a 3" damascus blade, brass guard, blue spacers and a tapered stag handle. Looks great, works well, and is small enough to carry in the pocket or on the belt with the supplied sheath (not the best BTW). For something really different, a friend of mine makes custom sheaths for neck carry. These are very practical knives for neck carry as they are truly a harmless looking, classy knife that people admire when they see it.

When I ever come across a CRKT Point Guard I'll pick one up. Very nice design! I saw one of the Kaspers in a store and tried it out. It's way to small for my hand..we're talking not enough room to get my pinky finger near the handle. But I realized that the safety LAWKS are livable.

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

Stompy: I'm guessing you picked up the smaller (6772/82) version of the Kasper. The large one is LARGE!! If that one is still too small I can't imagine what would fit your hand

Hello,

Dollar for dollar, the Ka-Bar USMC is tough to beat.

CRKT, in my book, makes great knives. They can't be beat for the money.

It is great to see custom knive makers collaborating with them to bring great production knives to the market. Makers like Greg Lightfoot, Kasper, Brian Tighe, Steve Ryan and Kit Carson to name a few.

If these guys are willing to put their names on these knives, then you can bet they are great knives.

my 2 cents.

Phil
