currently I'm using multiple layers of masking tape to provide some clearance in my kydex sheaths. I was curious though if there were any other methods out there to keep scratches to a minimum. Thanks in advance:D

I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but I think there is some sheath that has nylon webbing or something lining the inside of the sheath. Makes a quieter draw too probably. Maybe it was the Ka-Bar eagle sheath or something?

I form the blade section over a thicker piece of bar stock first then reheat the handle section and form that to the knife.

The alternative is to take a page from the leather sheath construction and add an extra strip along the open edge, I think it is called a selvedge strip to open up the sheath a bit.

Hey Bill...

Tell me exactly what problems you are having....

3-4 layers on each side should be plenty enough to create a buffer between the sheath and knife....

If you are having scratching problems still,,then it more then likely could be your process...

Make sure the knife does not twist when it goes in the mold..Some knives like to turn slightly, causing a concave press on one side..
This happens sometimes and is hard to control on some knives...

Make sure the press you are using is giving you accruate even downward pressure....

Another thing you want to keep in check is cleanliness..The grinding process will introduce grit inside your sheath,,if this is not controlled ,,you will have BIG problems with scratching...

I have a special way of controlling this grit problem and wash the sheath under high pressure Anytime sandpaper is used on the sheath.

If you are getting actual scratching and not just Scuffs or Buffing,,then look into the cleanliness of your process..
If it's scuffing and buffing,,you've got other problems...
The taping of the blade should be neat trimmed and seamless..

Hope that helps...
Feel free to e-mail me with specifics.

Hi Bill: The way RJ Martin told me to do it works great for me.. I run 2 layers of duct tape down the length of the blade on each side and then cut it around the profile with scissors. After the sheath is molded use bit of rubbing alchohol on a rag and run it through the sheath a couple times to remove any tape gunk that might be left over..
This greatly reduces the lateral scratches, but remember to keep the area around the guard tight for retention. Hope this helps ya..
