The SOG Vulcan and the Tom Cat lll ?
I am in a, can't decide which one to purchase mode.
I guess it boils down to the big cost spread, approximately $50 to $60 more for the TC. Is it worth paying the extra bucks for the TC ?

Thanks,

dave

I was just looking at both of them and ended up putting the Vulcan on my wish list. The price difference didn't make sense to me, both being otherwise similar.

Esav Thanks for the reply :D this is what I'm thinking also.
Until someone can explain the reasoning for such a price difference, then I'll go with the Vulcan. Having to do all my buying over the net, one has to go with the views/comments of others. When I started collecting Spyderco's and asked
Which model?? Yike's that was easy..the consensuses was buy them all! you wont be disappointed. :p

It can be difficult deciding when there's a price difference between knives from different companies, but these two are both about the same size and style.

I've been on the fence between these two models for over 6 months. Although I've been leaning towards the TC 3.0

Here's the specs for the TC 3.0

Overall Length: 8.65"
Blade Length: 3.75"
Blade Material: VG-10 Stainless
Lock: Arc-Lock
Handle Material: Kraton
Handle Length: 4.90"
Weight: 6.50 oz.
Bolster(s): Stainless Steel
Liner(s): Stainless Steel
Sheath: Nylon

Average price $130

Now the Vulcan:

Overall Length: 8.37"
Blade Length: 3.50"
Blade Thickness: 0.160"
Blade Material: VG-10 Stainless
Lock: Arc Lock
Handle Material: Zytel
Handle Length: 4.87"
Weight: 5.00 oz.
Liner(s): Stainless Steel
Clip: Stainless Steel

Average price $90.00

The difference is the size open ( TC has a longer blade), the bolsters ( TC has solid bolsters) and the weight ( TC is heavier). Plus IMO the TC looks more expensive ( justifying the extra cost).

But the Vulcan has a pocket clip and the TC comes with a belt pouch, this last point causes me to hesitate in my final decision.

I prefer the weight and handle material and clip of the Vulcan.
I don't need the extra weight and "looks expensive" means nothing to me.

lol That's what I tell the Wife :p

I've read comments from users (on a youtube video) between 2 guys owning both; apparently they would prefer the TC for it being more "ergonomic" and "feeling better quality in hand", although they both seemed to love the Vulcan anyway...

Pretty empty info I know, but still it might add a bit more weight in the balance and cause some extra confusion for you as to which one to choose :P

Personally, I'm still waiting for my Mini Vulcan in the mail, and damn it's too long! :P
If I were to choose between both like you, I'd go with the Vulcan anyway (chose the mini for the size as EDC, my FlashII tanto and Endura4 are too "impressive" to get it out when people you don't know is around)

Just my 2¢

I've read comments here to the effect that heavier weight meant greater quality. Spydercos occasionally get tagged as cheap or flimsy for being slim and light. I don't agree with that at all and feel that weight for the sake of weight is a big negative.

I've been comparing my Spyderco Military and Chinook. Both are about the same size, big blades, same steel, same domestic production. The Military is so much lighter, there are times that alone is enough to make it the knife of the day.

I'd go with the Vulcan anyway (chose the mini for the size as EDC, my FlashII tanto and Endura4 are too "impressive" to get it out when people you don't know is around)

I hear you! Even when it's not a problem for bystanders, there are times I simply prefer a small blade for light-duty, close-up work. On the other hand, for me today, that small knife is ... a Flash II. :D

Fudoshin Thanks for your

much appreciated.
I couldn't stand it any longer so I ordered a sog VL1 this afternoon.
I was thinking about what Esav was saying about carrying weight, and yes
I love my Spyderco's lighter weight, so in short the Vulcan wins over the TC
on this point. Who knows I may find an excuse in the future to purchase a TC,
knowing me, the only excuse needed, would be because,I don't have one:p

Let us know how you like it.

I'm still undecided, I like the solid bolters on the TC , but don't like that it doesn't have a clip.

good luck:)

Well the Vulcan full size came in. :D

The fit and finish is well done, also the blade is skinning sharp, and the lock up is solid. I really like the blade shape, kinda like a cross between a drop point and spear point. The scales where the pocket clip are rough,as are most brands.
So I took sand paper to that area, and now with the low rider clip, she slips out of the pocket like a $20.00 bill on Friday night.

Would I recommend this knife? Sure I would,as far as I'm concerned it is just as nice as my beloved Spidies and and a few Benchmades.
Some day's are Spidie days other days feel like a SOG day, today is a SOG day.

That's good to hear.... maybe I'll get one too.

Enjoy it.

Go for it! Unless your a die hard one brand only person, then a change up to a SOG is kinda liberating. After 24hrs with this knife, I believe that I like it even more,it is one tough user,no tipsy toeing around with this one. :p
