Anybody know of any companies that do this sort of thing
?
I want to build MY perfect daypack/weekend camp pack. It's funny that with all the packs out there, the makers still don't have a clue about what people really want. I want built in exterior pockets that are useful and well placed. It seems that the follwing items are what most of us have on us when we are out.

Point and Shoot camera pocket on the strap in front or waistbelt, (not a cheap piece of elastic that stretches, a real pocket!)

Smokes/cigar pocket with room for lighter on the strap or waistbelt, (not a cheap piece of elastic that stretches, a real pocket!)

Keys/wallet/phone pocket with dividers,

A junk pocket sized for firesteel, SAK's, etc,

Webbing in the right places for kydex knife sheaths to attach to.

Water bottle pockets each side , no cover (like firepack side pouches yet slim), that will stack 2 -38 oz nalgenes w/nested GSI cups on each or 1 -48oz. nalgene in each side w/ nested GSI cups on each with room to spare for a burner and fuel on top of each side. Also between the pack and the bottle holders, a heavy slot for a long blade or machete.

A stowable attached rain cover

Bedroll straps on bottom to haul whatever it is you need that day.

All this in a Rucksac pack with some backbone so it doesnt look like there a 50 pound rock dead center drooping down the main compartment.

A second on Kifaru. I've got an Express that I had some mods done to it. Not cheap, but will last a lifetime.

Did Kifaru do the mods? Were they extensive mods? Curous as to what they did and what they charged to do it.

The Zulu has been tempting me for a long time but i'd spend a small fortune buying pouches for it. I see the 2008 E&E bags are 30% off!

Kifaru makes GREAT packs however, last time I checked they were so busy with their packs and specifically the military side that they are not doing any custom packs.

It would still be worth buying one and taking it to someone who could modify it.

There is a woman on this forum named "penny" and she used to do a lot of custom work. http://www.backpacking.net/bbs.html

It won't be cheap but at least you'll get what you want.

Check out Mystery Ranch Backpacks also.

I'll second that, my kodiak carries 100 pounds of gear like it were 50. Their NICE frame is sick. All the Keltys I've had were extremely adjustable so if you're looking for something like that... Otherwise you could go MOLLE and pretty much build your pack from the straps up.

Yes they did the mods, mostly adding more pals to it. They were busy enough that I waited about 3 months for it. Don't remember what it cost now, but it's the best pack I've ever had.

Take a look at Eberlestock's stuff, might be what you're looking for... thy have some pretty rockin accessories too.

I have a Mystery Ranch Big Sky in Multicam. The Multicam version has MOLLE on the hip belt and both sides of the pack. I added an EOD pouch to one side and a FAK pouch on the other. With the MOLLE on the hip belt, you could have a knife and a couple pouches.
