Is there a difference between San Mai and laminated steel?

Just curious if there is a difference between san mai and laminated steel or if san mai is just Japanese for laminated steel.

San Mai is Japanese for "three layers"...It is also applied to

laminates where the center layer in a single type of steel

and the outer layers are pattern welded (damascus).

It's like frisbee and "disc". Or Coca-cola vs cola.

San Mai III is a trademark for lamination
