Is there a difference in Chinese SS vs. European and American SS

I know a lot of folks don't care for the cheaper Chinese made SS knives....but there are some SS knives out of Germany and the US which use SS that seemed to be collected and loved by knife collectors.

So my question is this. Is there a difference in the quality of Chinese SS vs. Western SS?

Say like a Chinese 440A SS compared to an American or European 440A SS blade?

The biggest difference would be in the quality control of the heat treat. I have a knife from China that is 440A and is as good as one I have from the U.S. of the same material. Same mfg by the way.

Blessings,

Omar

Seeing as there are NO quality control methods in place any where at any time for anything. I would NOT trust anything coming out of China. We bought some steel out of China at night school ( industrial blacksmithing course ) It was absolute crap! Some of it was layered with flutes and just looked like wrought iron and some of it was hard, I'm talking about 1020 round bar, the same length of bar. CRAP! Obviously smelted out of scrap and not well. Just take off the S and thats what you get!
Cheers Keith

If both steels are certified by independent lab that they correspond to 440A standard, the should be close as close could be. I mean that two batches of 440A from the same manufacturer will have different, but withing specification, content. Also keep in the mind that steel is a blade potential only. Two different heat-treatment processes can create much bigger difference.

China has everything available in all different quality levels including very clean state of the business stuff for space programs. It all depends on who you do business with, what you pay for, and how much QC gets done. There have been melts in the US and europe sent back to the foundry for being out of spec too. It's not unique to china, or India, another name that gets mentioned. Pakistan? Who knows? I've seen some lousy pot metal stuff from there but that doesn't mean it came from a large foundry. It might have been the neighborhood all purpose recycle/repurpose/foundry/gun & knife fabricators/radio repair facility.

I had a cheap knife from pakistan years ago that was I'd swear chrome plated plastic and not even pot metal. :)
