I have heard many horror stories about knife laws in NYC but i'm wondering if the same laws and practices (Knife Flick test for gravity knives) apply to upstate NY. I will be traveling to Upstate NY to visit family and I was wondering what type of knives i could bring.

No easy response here...NYC uses the STATE law in regards to what they consider a gravity knife. Courts have upheld their use of the STATE law, so you could be charged anywhere in NY State.....Most places outside of NYC do not enforce the law as the City does, but they COULD ......The only part that is a City only law, is the fact in NYC your knife can not be exposed...The gravity knife, switchblade laws are STATE law.....

Ive been carrying knives for as long as I can remember and only had a cop ask once if I had a knife I said yes and that was it he never even looked at it

also try not to draw the attention of them and they wont bother you

The state isnt as bad as some think it is just one city ruining it for everybody else

little off topic but 52 counties are opposed to the safe act so you should be fine there

http://www.nysaferesolutions.com/resolutions/ all counties in green oppose the safe act so a nice large area to roam freely in

as to what type of knife no autos or balisongs everything else is pretty much a go

Only NYC has a length limit and a 100% conceal regulation. Upstate one can have belt knife, pocket clips etc. The "dangerous knife" prohibition is statewide, so no double edges or "dirks". Have never had a problem either, but it is possible though extremely unlikely some Downstate export LE could apply the NYC gravity knife definition (has already happened in a few instances in the Capitol region IIRC).
