I'm really starting to hate outlook express and I was hoping someone knows of a good email/newsreader thats freeware.

Gmail, web based google email. It's invite only, I can send you one if you'd like.

Courier is free, and it's by far the best email client I have tried.
You can also enable pop3 for Gmail, and use a regular email client to send recieve gmail as well.

I really like Eudora but, it is a little old school these days.

Thunderbird is a good one for a direct Outlook Express replacment.

Gmail is far better then Hotmail too.

I use GMail more and more for business emails. It also seems to handle large attachments better than Hotmail. I use Gmail to send prerecorded commercials to radio stations as MP3 files and GMail has always handled them flawlessly. (I have lots of "invites" if anyone wants one)

Email client software -
the top 3 downloads in order at Softpedia.com Email Clients were:

Outlook Express 6.0
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.8
Foxmail 6.0 beta 4

Pricelessware 2006 selected Email clients lists

Mozilla Thunderbird
Pegasus Mail

Lastly for Free web based Email - please take a look at
Webmail, Best Free Email Service Provider, Hosting
at ConsumerSearch.com where they claim to be reviewing the reviews - ie: survey the reviews and come to some concensus......
Gmail followed by Yahoo! Mail were their picks.......

by newsreader I meant something I can use to read messages on newsgroups

You can use google to read newsgroups. Just go to google, then click on 'more' then click 'groups'

You can then search for the newgroup you want to read. Not sure if it is as good as a fee based service as I have never used one, but it works for me.

Free Agent is a great newsreader. Pegasus is a good free email tool. If you want to combine them in one, the best is Agent, a commercialization of Free Agent. But it's not expensive and works most impressively.

You can get the freebies at www.tucows.com

Gmail, web based google email. It's invite only, I can send you one if you'd like.

You can also get into gmail if you give them your cell number. They will text message you a code that you input onto the registration form. I got an invite, from google- I got onto the list within days of it (the list) being opened.
