Is there a knife database that can help you find the right knife?

What would be cool is if there was some sort of database that you could punch all your wanted features into and it would give you the models that matched what you were looking for.

For example, I am looking for a knife to give to my brother as a gift for his EDC. I know many of his wanted features but sometimes it is overwheming where to start with all the brands and models out there.

He likes: plain edge, 3-4' blade, grippy handle, drop point blade, thicker blades, flat ground, non-coated, liner lock or frame lock and good steel.

What is not important to him as much is: rust resistant steel, looks, fit and finish, weight, and make.

I would like to keep it in the $50-75 dollar range since he is hard on his knives and doesn't need the high end stuff. He has never had a really good knife before so i want to show him what he is missing. The best knives he has had were a Gerber EZout and a Gerber linerlock with black black. Niether of these knives had great steel so I was thinking something like VG-10 might impress him. I like Spyderco so that is what I think of frist but he seem to like Benchmade more. He likes the liner lock too much to go for a Spyderco lockback I think.

The short answer is no.

The bright side is, all the fun you'll have researchin' what your lookin' for on the forum.

I dont think there are many well made liner locks in the $50-$75 range. For that price, I would go with a Spyderco, or a Benchmade Griptillian. Give him an Axis lock, and it will become his new favourite! :D

It's not exactly a database, but this is the resource you're looking for! You've already typed in your desired specs, now all you have to do is wait for the answers. Unlike a fully computerized database it can take a while -- wetware is not as fast as hardware -- but you will get your answers.

That's not a common knife you described there.
Benchmade, Griptillian/Ritter Grip is probably your best bet to getting close, but I don't think it's flat ground (not really any advantage to flat ground when you're talking about a hollow grind as shallow as on most folders), and it's Axis-lock. Though people love them here.

The only quality linerlocks or framelocks you'll find that are plain-edge drop points (or similar point) that I can think of are CRKT and Camillus.

Check out New Graham Knives for good prices and a great way to look at pics of knives by brand. Spend an hour looking through it all (this time will fly by) and you'll get a good feel for what's out there. As close to a "database" as you'll probably get.

I too had been wondering if there was a knife database but it would contain information on different generation of knives. Like say the endura went through three or four different steels and the clip has changed. Would be nice, esp for those who are buying used.

You might want to take a look at the Kershaw 1436 G10 Hawk. It doesn't meet all of your qualifications exactly, but it's fairly close. And they're a steal of a value on eBay right now.

It's a 3 1/4" clip point blade with a G-10 handle scales and an uncoated, plain edged, ATS-34 steel blade. The lock is liner lock, and the blade is flat ground.

You can currently find them for ~ $30 (+S&H) on eBay. I bought one a few weeks ago, and I've been very happy with it.

Is this a straight blade or folder for EDC? You mentioned folders but if he can use a straight blade where he works it might be easier and more practical than fooling around with a folder.

I would look at the spyderco salt Pacific model. Not too big for a folder, very strong and about maintenance free (except for resharpening from time-to-time).

topher,
I did take your advace and check out the Kershaw Hawk. It looks like a knife I would like. I bought two of them on E-bay for $56 shipped! That is only $28 each shipped! ATS-34, flatground blade and G-10 for $28? How can you go wrong? I got one for me and one for my brother. If he doesn't like it, I may give him my Para-Military.

I'll let you know what I think of the knife when I get it but I think I will like it since it is similar to my favorite knife of all time (Al Mar Shrike).

Very cool. ;-)

Like I mentioned, I've been very happy with it, myself. Amusingly, I also ended up getting two of them, and I paid right about the same price as you. Originally I was going to keep one and give the other to a friend of mine, but I ended up liking it so much that I made one of them my new EDC primary folder, and I'm keeping the other one as a spare back-up, just in case I need it. ;-)

I'm not sure where the guy on eBay found his stock, but he's letting them go for a steal. I found one place on the web that still had a few of the G-10 Hawk's for sale (since it was apparently discontinued some years ago), and they were selling them for around 120 Euros!

I'm definitely curious to hear your thoughts on the knife, though. I bought it as kind of a "what the heck, it's a good price" thing, and really wasn't prepared for how much I'd like the knife.

I can't wait to get it. I had never heard of the knife until you mentioned it. I thought I knew a little about Kershaw but they keep surprising me. I haven't told my brother that I was getting him a knife so if I really like it and decide to keep it, he won't even know. :p

I think he wants a mini-griptilian so I may get one for him even though I don't think much of the blade design. The handle and lock are great but the blade is too thick for my tastes.

I will post a review of some kind after I get my Kerhaw Hawk and get a chance to use it a little. Like I said, ATS-34, liner lock, G-10 scales and flat ground blade all for $28 shipped! How can you go wrong? The only thing that I would change just by looking at the knife is make the point more of a drop point and not so upswept. Maybe I will love the upswept tip once I get it but I tend to prefer the drop point or even a Wharnclifff point. My Al Mar Shrike is has a similar blade design as the Kershaw Hawk and I have never had an issue with it so we will see.
