Is there a list of licensed Spyder hole users?

No, the Spyderco hole is a trademark by Spyderco. Normally u should ask Sal Glesser if u can include his hole on a blade. It was once patented but i don't know whether the patent is still valid. Sal sometimes gives permission to use the hole to custom knifemakers. If u want to use the hole on a blade that u want design for commercial use u will need to contact Mr Glesser. Mr Glesser visits this forum almost daily so u should drop him a line.

If I remember what I've read correctly (I think from a past thread re: Benchmade 630), the Spyderhole was once patented, but the patent has expired (as all patents eventually do). It's still trademarked though. For the very modest fee of $50, a maker can licence the Spyderhole for up to 50 knives, per year. I assume the cost is more if a manufacturer wants to licence it for production knives (Benchmade licenced the Spyderhole years ago, but now use the oval).

If there's a list of makers who licence the Spyderhole, I'm unaware of it, but I'm sure we could make one.

The one I'm aware of is knifemaker and fellow forumite Jans Anso.

One of my ambitions, if I manage to become the knifemaker I hope to someday be, is to do a run of D/A Spyderhole automatics. Not for a while though...gotta learn how first.

"The Spyderco Story - the New Shape of Sharp" lists 48 Custom makers and 8 Manufacturers who have "voluntarily recognized Spyderco's patents and paid royalties" with respect to the opening hole.

I won't list them all here but the makers include such recognizable names as Centofante, Crawford, Elishewitz, Emerson, Goddard, D'Holder, Horn, Lum, Onion, Terzuola, Walker and Wegner. I doubt that all maintain the licenced use continuously, but many do.

A few that I have seen that were really memorable are Bob Lum's custom chinese folders and a Kasper Fighting Folder by Pat Crawford with round opening holes. I've heard that Sal has a custom KFF by Crawford, complete with Round hole, serrations and pocket clip  That's a collaboration I'd like to see Spyerco produce.

Bob is licensed by Sal to use the hole. Aside fom the Chinese Folder, Bob also uses it on the Folding Tanto and his All-Rounder model.
