Is there a more useless knife than a Khukuri?

An interesting exchange about Khukuris on Frugal Forum. HI received some very good comments and khukuri pictures.

I warn you it is a looong read. The original poster sure has some misconceptions, and received some heat about them.It wasn't a flame situation, just a little spanking.

Apparently one of the posters doesn't know about the HI Blems. We'll keep it a secret. OK?:)

Tell us about this site...

They want to know a lot about me just to read about some newbie getting set straight on khuks.

I am unable to access the article, and I don't feel like making a new username and pwd.

Tell me something. Is it anything like the popular misconception that a well-made katana can cut through machine-gun barrels, tree trunks, cars and cinder blocks without taking a scratch?

The thread pretty much boiled down to debate over using a small knife and not chopping when camping and using a big knife like a khukri to chop wood when camping, and also a debate about the effectiveness of thrusting styles (rapier or dagger) vs. chopping and slashing styles.

The reason for the requirements they have to join is that a few months ago the forum was plagued by trolls, some offering dangerous and/or highly illegal "advice." One of the funnier ones was a nut that has a wierd view of survival. He plans to carry an AR-15 with a .22 conversion kit and a can for a silencer so he can quietly snipe at people, take their gear, put it in his Assault Wheelbarrow, and move onto the next target. They try to keep these types out.

I was planning on buying a Cold Steel Khukri, but as a result of that thread I think I'll get an HI one. :D

This is a long, long thread - I got in, and my WebTV "timed out" twice while I was reading it (ten minutes with no activity, and it disconnects). Don't want to dis anybody, but the original poster is ...younger :) and gives the impression that he is still reading Atlanta Cutlery catalogs in his search for quality. He considers the Glock knife a good example of a woods utility blade. Nice thing about the forum is that the rebuttals are educational, and while they have taken pains to correct him, they have left his skin intact.

hahah Bruise, if you wann read his latest crap, he's currently posting at Libertyfront and Patriot Network

I tried to view the thread, but after registering I was informed by 'bot that I was previously banned from the forum?

Weird. :o

Especially since I'd never seen Frugal's before. huh. :grumpy:

Anyone else have this problem?

Probably someone using the same name. There's someone on this forum using the name Bruise Lee.

Just to clarify, the wheelbarrow guy, Gunkid, is not the same person as the one who started the khukuri thread. That guy is reasonable, IMO, he just has a difference of opinion on blades, not even one as bad as those guys who only carry a small SAK in the woods.

If you want to read something wierder than Gunkid's posts, do a search on misc.survivalism for the names "Alan Conner," "Quonster" and "Mabu." :D

The guy who started the thread views has some interesting views on knives and other things. Oddly enough, like a lot of posters with 'odd' views, he's not a kid, but middle aged.

He views the Khukuri as nothing more than a tool for chopping wood in camp or 'executing by beheading or disembowling helpess, tied up prisonsers of war' by savage 'Muslim', Gurkhas. He also thinks that while living in the woods for extended periods, you've no actual need to ever have to chop wood.

Gurkhas executing POWs; no need to chop wood while roughing it? Where do people get these ideas?

Maybe he's ex-Air Force where roughing it is a 2 star hotel with a pool for toga parties and central air and an in house bar?:footinmou

Ouch:(

This one in particular sticks in my head, guys from his unit were with me on my last trip over.

I just checked out Libertyfront. Let me guess... is it Billydee?

You got it Benjamin. :) Though if you go far enough back in posts, he had two other handles(that he forgot passwords for).

And while Mabu and Alan Conner are hilarious,t hey are not Gunkid. Those three are basically the "survival" hall of shame. After all their stupidity no room for anyone else. GUnkid and Mabu have been around for yeras. Alan Conner appeared pretty recently, but he moved up fast. Go find story of his "origins". His bit about the "Amazon warrior" sound almost like a bad imitation of a Penthouse letter.

Sarge,

I definitely didn't want to make anyone think I don't know that most of the AF guys were in the same field position as everyone else. During Desert Storm we lost one of our pilots and those guys lived in field conditions.

The story that irked me and sent the wrong message to the entire state of NE was the 2 page article the Omaha paper published about the wonderful crew they sent to the mid-east who were living in a 5 star resort on Crete or some other Mediterranean island and calling it wartime conditions. They weren't doing anything any different than any of the other crews who lived in tents without AC and running h2o etc.

Personnally I think it was a play by the media to make the war look like we were wasting all of our tax $$ on resorts. Never did they post more than little clips on the rest of the guys, although I saw a lot of coverage on TV and other media sources. So go figure.

Does that help to get me out of hot water and UNmisunderstood?? :footinmou I should have put the rest of the story in the first post. Must be that time of the month:footinmou  Brain not completely engaged.

Don't sweat it none Gin, that was my bad for being overly sensitive. Unfortunately, I've seen plenty guys like you mentioned, but absolutely none since I moved over into the tactical ground operations side of things. That's been just over a decade now.

As I recall in that race across the desert to Bagdad one of the tanks way out in front was full of AF personnel. That ain't roughing it at the Statler Hilton.
