Hi,

Im not a real bushman, or expert in this area.

But just for when I go walking in the woods and those activities Id thought to get some 550 Paracord.

Is there a preferred color you guys recommend, such as a bright florescent orange, or green, or do most people get OD or something dark?

--- Also I live in Canada and would like to buy from Ebay...so as long as I get 7-strand TypeIII 550 it should all be the same quality stuff right? Some ads say its from a certified US contractor, other ad dont mention that.

Thanks!

i usually get black because i generally like that color but when it's fall i use orange a lot as lanyard on my knives and other small things to keep me from losing them on a pile of leaves. as long as they say it's 7-strand/type iii 550 (i've seen 8-strand now too from a reputable dealer) you're good to go in my opinion.

some people buy tent or tarp specific cords - that is, there's reflectors built into it so you can see them better with a flashlight at night and so as not to trip over it. i'm not sure how they compare to 550 paracord though.

most people like the earth tones for outdoors. problem is that it blends in so well its easy to lose! it all depends what you are doing. I want to blend in with shelter. I wrap certain things with high-vis cords/lanyards like my knife and my compass.

commercial type III 550 cord is great; In my opinion there is no justification for paying more for the full mil-spec version of paracord.

Something bright is probably safer.

That being said, people usually just go with whatever color they like.

I have some orange and some black. Use different stuff for different reasons.

Mostly just personal preference.

I use blaze orange on things I want to be highly visible (firesteels, flashlights), and I use tan, coyote, black or OD for everything else.

I have some orange, some black, and a little green.

I use black when I'm wrapping something to have a little extra cord if needed. Orange if I'm doing something where I want it visible.

The green is currently in my woods/work bag because I bought it on a whim and want to use it up.

I try to coordinate the color of my paracord with what I am wearing that day. I feel off if my paracord doesn't match my clothes.

I am not a real woodsman either, bit I am a fashionable one!

:D

On a serious note, high visibility colors like orange or blue come in handy for tying down your tarp, or for lanyards on tools that you may put down on the ground.

Hahahah...:D

I think I will get orange in 100ft to start. People say it lasts them for a long time...so I just wanted to check for opinions before buying.

Otherwise if I get something and don't like it, its a waste...but its only $10 shipped so it wont kill me.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies and comments!

Bright blue will show up best in an outdoor environment--virtually nothing in nature is bright blue (hence why eating in a blue room reduces your appetite--it ain't natural! :D), so the chances of you spotting something blue in the woods is actually much higher than spotting orange.

What I like to do is use different colours for different lengths, that way if I need a specific length for something, I can identify it by colour.

Doc

I use orange or red for lanyards ( helps me find the item) and black or olive drab for sheath rigging and such. Been going for the plain black more lately.

They all tie off the same, but the desert tan sets off the dark green of my bivy when rigging the foot so it's not laying on my bag, and the foliage green of my pack when making gear loops or tie-offs on the webbing. It's very stylish:D

I got tired of not being able to find my stuff so now I use orange blaze or bright blue. I also use red cordage for my tarp but not paracord because it stretches too much.

Why didn't I think of that? That you Doc, that's a great idea.

Gotta love forums for that reason: lots of knowledge to go around. I'm going to have to file that trick away for the next time I'm in the backcountry.

Otherwise, I totally advocate the bright colors for lanyards, earth-tones for lashings and so on. The only knife I've ever lost/left behind was the one that was both not colorful and had no orange lanyard

I like the Hi-Viz yellow color. It makes gear easier to find, and possibly a little "friendlier" looking to non-knife folk.

+1

On some other forums people would probably tell me to get whatever matches your purse or some other rude reply, but thats why this forum is good, people are helpful and thoughtful and you can learn things that you would not have thought of.

Thanks again!
