Is there a reason no one has made hard rubber scales for large becker knives?

Either a rubber overmold like hogue grips or solid rubber.

It wouldn't be as durable as standard or micarta scales, but the grip would be outstanding.

It would provide some shock absorption for the choppers.

Since all of the large knives use the same scales there are a lot of potential consumers.

It would change the knife completely.

I feel like its a very good idea, and it might allow some good color options, but the available grips are already saturating the market.

What I think Ethan did that is VERY smart is that he only has two types of grips. If a mega company like hogue were asked to make grips for a knife with the sales numbers of the Bk9, they might not be interested... but a group of knives that sell as well as the beckers do might get someones attention. And I hope it does, I like your idea!
I would like the same shape grips as the stock scales, but with the overmold rubber, color variation, and pebble texture of the hogue grips.

It's funny you mention that, it is something me and Dex had talked about at the gathering.

Polyurethane & rubber have crossed my mind before. I think filling the hollows of the scales and handle with rubber, would be a nice way to reduce shock. Then just throw on a ranger band, glove or spray rubber lol. But if the material isn't just right, it might send shock back up the blade causing more frequent breaks. Not something I want to test. Unless it's a solid tang Becker.

I used rubber "scales" within the wrapped grip of a sword recently. I like it so much it's my new go-to material for the purpose.

I have some rubber mat (similar to horse stall mat) that I intend to experiment with. Might be hard to do as anything more than a one-off, tho.

some very enterprising person, or two, apparently used actual Becker grips as mold references, made copies in a lot of spongey materials.

the handles are copyrighted, design feature and all that. so, he was asked to stop. thus... i hear they were okay though.

iffn y'all do a one off? go fer it

gunna sell them? design your own shape

one could of course, try to say tool dip, or wrap them in tape? or ...

honestly though, vibrations? never noticed

Winkler Knives uses recycled tires for an option on their handles..I haven't seen these but would think they'd be tough as nails?
Mileage may vary tho...

In the meantime, has anyone tried the Ka-Bar 1277. I've got one and it seems to match the description -- except for the 1085 steel.

The Ka-Bar wouldn't do it for me personally for a few reasons. - nation of origin - lack of thumb ramp - hidden tang - 1085

That being said, although it looks like a nice knife, its just not quite what I imagine as a Bk9 with rubber or rubberized grips. Speaking of which, if I could get the stock grips "rubberized" like magpul does their moe grip, that would be exactly what i would want... in tan. :-)

Actually, I wish kabar/ Becker would look into simply replacing the grivory materials with an elastomer like what is used in the Ontario OKC3S marine bayonet. That material is NICE. I have handled alot of those bayonets lately lol.

That being said, maybe having a rubber or elastomer material would grab the hand too much during hard use and it could create hot spots? I am sure Ethan choose this materials for reasons other than cost. Which I am not saying would be bad if he did... I love that we can get these knives at the price point that we do :-)
