Is there a reason to go with a 940 over a Crooked River or Nakamura?

i am torn as I can buy a S30V full sized CR in Diamondwood for the same price as a 940 in S30V (Stainless of G10).

Not to confuse things, but a M390/G10 Nakamura is also the same price.

I can only afford to buy one, but am on the fence. I am leaning towards the Crooked River. Mainly for aesthetics.

Anyone have or handled all 3? Thoughts? Experience?

My BM stable currently consists of an older Pardue in 440, a Bugout and a Full size Grip.

Thanks!

Ha, you checked the west coast website too eh? I have a 940-2 so that doesn't count, but I do have the 943 and I do prefer the clip point blade over the reverse tanto. Not by much but still. I also have the 484 and that one will be buried with me.

I know you have the Positron, so to give you an idea, the Nakamura is the same size as the Positron and very similar in the hand. The CR doesn't interest me so I can't help you there.

Well the full sized CR is a lot bigger than the other 2 knives, so that would be my first consideration in choosing: will it round out your collection? Or be too big to use often?

I have/had only Crooked River (both the wood and the g10 version) and 940-1501. These are VERY different knives. If you need a BIG folder, go for CR. Otherwise, buy 940 or the other.

Nakamura is probably the best “bang for your buck” in this case. Personally the 940 is my fav of these 3 but it really comes down to size. It’s kinda hard to make recommendations based on anything other than personal preference.

Imho the 940 platform is best in way overpriced Cf 940-1 version because it has minimal liners which take advantage of cf’s ridgidity. However I like the 940 in all versions, it is just an extremely pocket friendly knife that gives you alot of blade for its size.

Is the mini CR much cheaper?

Yes, you are right.
Out of those three knives (I have all 3), in the steels you listed, I would go with the Crooked River.

I've had the CR G-10, a few 940's & a Nakamura 484. Whichever you choose will not be a bad choice. Good luck!

I have handled all 3 and only own a 940 (the -1501 from knifeworks, specifically). Absolutely nothing wrong with any of them, but all are quite a bit different, as already pointed out. You should try to handle them yourself, if possible, then get whichever you love the most! Not that I wouldn't own a 484 or a CR, but I am looking for a 940-1 (or a 940-121, if I ever find one) before I would buy one of those.

Benchmade's M390 is probably my favorite steel of the ones I do own, however! (154CM, S30V, 20CV, M4, D2)

Thanks all. I decided to go in a different direction and ordered a 560 Freek and save $70 over the aforementioned.

Cheers!
