Is there a Sharpmaker support group?

Hi. My name is Lavan and I'm a sharpaholic. I am taking it one day at a time and feeling much better.

I got the video with my Sharpmaker and watched it diligently. Other than my disappointment at seeing that Sal Glesser is just an ordinary looking geek and not what I expected (pencil mustache, swarthy evil look, black cape) of a true ...BLADE... expert, I followed all the instructions.

But alas, I am backsliding.

Oh I got all the kitchen knives done at the recommended 40 degree angle.

But....well....my EDC. I am back on the hard stuff. 30 degree scary sharp. You know how it is. Damn the durable edge! Gimme the slicey dicey high of the pop of arm hair. The incredible buzz of slitting the tiny strip of newspaper. OH.

............Sorry.

Anyway, I need help. Can someone please keep in contact with me so I can learn to apply sane edges to ALL knives. Someone I can call in the middle of the night when that.......URGE.....hits again.

To hone the blade just ...one more time.

PLEASE?

:(

Better ask at the Spyderco forum. Not quite sure how Sal will take the "geek"-stuff though. :D

Spyderco has a forum on their own site as well, but the number and quality of replies you'll get there doesn't differ much with the BF-Spyderco forum.

You still seem to be suffering from the same compulsion. I guess that I'll repeat my suggestion of the Clark 12-step program for addressing this compulsion. Just remember that after you complete the 12th step, put the tools away.

My 12 step program usually starts with a very dull blade:

1. Admit the blade has a problem.
2. Rough sharpen the left side using 80 grit sanding belt.
3. Rough sharpen the right side using 80 grit sanding belt.
4. Rough sharpen the right side using 120 grit belt.
5. Rough sharpen the left side using 120 grit belt.
6. Intermediate sharpen using 220 grit belt alternating right/left/right/left sides.
7. Remove all burrs on medium coarse diamond hone alternating side-side.
8. Clean up bevel and do primary fine sharpening on extra-fine diamond hone alternating sides (under running tap water).
9. Refine edge using Sharpmaker medium grit rod edges at 15-degrees per side.
10. Further refine edge using medium rod flats.
11. Deburr the edge using diamond hone at 40 degrees per side.
12. Finish the edge at 20 degrees per side on Sharpmaker.

On back-sliding days I sometimes strop my blade or hone them on the slick white rods.

My one-step program for a dull blade (once again):

1. "Hey, dad? Sharpen this for me? Thanks." :D

Why does it matter what the guy looks like anyway?
