I just acquired a NIB Cold Steel Magnum Tanto IX. Beautiful knife, wicked sharp right out of the box.
While I'm not planning on sharpening it for the time being (it's not exactly an EDC
) there will probably come a time when it will need some work on it. It has the San Mai III steel, with VG1 for the core. The spine is 3/16", plenty good, and the blade is hollow ground, and then has a V-edge where the cutting takes place. It is friggin sharp...
So here's my question: is there an optimal angle for the cutting edge on this kind of knife? What would be the best compromise for sharpness, edge retention and toughness? Lots in that one question, I know, but there are quite a few gurus on here...
