I was wondering if there was aftermarket stones for this system? im looking for a 3000 or 4000 grit stone just to have one or two steps of honing stone before the strop

I never found after market stones for mine. I put sandpaper over the stones. I didnt know about the diamond lapping fis back then. Like these from Jende https://www.jendeindustries.com/products/sharpening-products/diamond-films Sticking the film to your stone will ever so slightly raise the angle. Just reset the guide rod the same way you normally set it. Lay it on a flat surface. But no I never found aftermarket stones for the lansky. Edited this as David was posting the same suggestion about setting the guide rod below. Sorry for the confusion

One other option is to have stones cut. Ken Schwartz offers this service for all the stones available on Jende. Here's his email if you want to contact him about pricing ksskss@earthlink.net . You could buy the cheapest lansky stone and remove the stone to use the holder. They come off easy. I took the stones off my lansky to use them in my kme for recurves etc. So Ive got 5 of the holders with no stones setting out in the shop. I could send you a couple. Or you could stick a piece of marble to the holders for a permanent place to stick the psa backed lapping films. Just some thoughts

Also thought of lapping or polishing films, stuck onto an existing hone. So long as the working surface of the hone is set in the same plane as the rod, the difference in thickness will not make a difference in sharpening angle. In other words, apply the adhesive film to the hone, then re-set both the hone and rod against a flat surface to make them flush. Angle will not be altered this way; it's one of the advantages of the Lansky setup, in that the hone's position can be adjusted up/down, relative to the guide rod, which renders the hone's thickness irrelevant to the setup.

One or a couple duplicates of the smoother Lansky hones, like the 600 'Fine' or the 1000 'Ultra-Fine' would work well for attaching the polishing film.

The 3 best stones that are available gor a lansky are a blue sapphire. 2000 grit ceramic 1000 grit and a black Arkansas. I have at least 3 of every stone for a lansky. Thats about all i use anymore.

I have attached wet/dry to a Lansky hone and it worked well. Not enough of an angle change, imo, to worry about.
I'd like to have a 4k or higher stone to set in a handle...that would be very nice

Kai,
You can purchase or make a leather strop for the lansky. I use a plain strop one with flexcut gold and one with zam green polishing compound. Then you can achieve the 4k :)

Thanks buckman.
I have the leather strop...what a waste of money...but perhaps a good way to use the holder.

we all understand how its used, its faster and easier to just use a normal block strop in my (and many) opinion

I made my strop for the lansky. It looks pretty useful to me.

its not that it doesnt work, its just faster to do by hand if you're good at freehand, im saying many because when i was getting reviews for it i was told by a few different people just to use a normal strop instead, and theres people here already saying the same thing, it will work but its in my opinion that the general census is its not worth it

Well a black Arkansas stone puts a keener edge than ceramic. And that blue sapphire stone is useless. Its not 2000 grit i assure you. I also have the old old white sapphire. It might be 1500.
