Is there any reason to pick up a mora if I have a Victorinox Outrider?

Other than batonning of course? I'm trying to keep my go bag as light as possible and for the most part I see people constantly recommending moras. I can see why for the quality you get for the price, but practically, I don't see them using them for heavy duty use. Mostly they are used to skinning, whittling, and creating feather sticks. Can an outrider perform those duties just as well? A companion is about five ounces with the sheath. For that weight an outrider comes equipped with a blade, a saw and an awl. Neither is specially suited to heavy use, so I'm debating whether to pair the outrider, or the mora with a heavier fixed blade.

I bought a orange handle morakniv at a local knife show... then both my Brothers and my Mom had me order the same Orange Morakniv's for themselves. $15.95 each... not that heavy duty of a knife imo. But they will shave hair out of the box; are orange so you can find them; Stainless steel, love the plastic lock sheaths they come in. And they are cheap price/ but nice knifes. Pretty happy with purchase and so is everyone else!? :)

I'd pair the mora with a heavier fixed blade and be set.

I find Moras more than heavy duty enough for most of my use. That said, I generally have some SAK style folder with a saw when I go hiking. Rarely use it, but it's handy when faced with the odd twisted ankle or such.

or pinned hand under a boulder situation right? :O :P

That's one gruesome story for sure. And no disrespect to the gentleman in question, but that tale is one of the things that prompted me to ALWAYS make sure someone knows where I'm going, what my route is and when to call the authorities if I'm not back/haven't checked in.

A mora will handle what you are throwing at it on a hike, you won't be needing a big chopper as you will have the saw, but it is nice to have a full size knife for cross-grain batoning, and there are some things the outrider won't like. I wouldn't call a mora a light duty knife.

It... depends...

I think the general consensus is to bring A knife.

The hallmark of a good go bag is that it is specific to the users needs. An L.A. earthquake kit for example is a very different monster to an alaskan bushpilots kit.

How much cutting are you likely to be doing?

Moras excel at tasks that involve working with wood. Many folks use the term Bushcraft for what I speak of. Personally that term sounds silly.
Your Outrider can do 90% of what you need. That said Moras are excellent knives for what they are made for and a lot sturdier than most folks give them credit for.

Where will you be going what will you be doing? That will really determine you knife-needs.

I do have the outrider and love that knife. I also carry a mora with me all the time. I find that both knives actually complement each other. I use the mora for most of the knife work and the outrider for the tools it has. But I wont feel bad if I had only the outrider.

I don't really have any plans in particular for what I would be doing. I'm mostly a city dweller but I want a decent set up for my bag at all times in case of an emergency.

Let's say I wanted to travel. Weight means everything. Most of the time I would be staying at an inn or something, but if I can't find one I would need to make a camp. What's an all around good setup for something like that? I'm not going to be building a cabin or anything. At most, a lean to if I didn't bring a tent. Would the outrider suffice as a one tool option? Or should I forgo it for the mora? Or should I grab them both and forget the bigger fixed blade? Decisions decisions...

Moras are cheap. I grabbed a few snd stuck them in randomnplaces in my house ,cars, bags etc. Nice to have, dirt cheap and weigh next to nothing . Last one I got was 11 bucks worth the risk IMO. If you hate it throw it in a tackle box, glove box or garage. It will come in handy sometimw.

If you want heavy duty then the newest Mora is the way to go ! Yes more expensive but obviously tougher with it's thicker blade etc !

Most Mora knives are UL. Also this is Bladeforums so odds are most wouldn't be opposed to packing more knives. :)

If you want to carry only one knife I would go with the outrider. With very little common sense it would do everything you want.

For the city, no. I live in Portland and my wife and I hop around different towns on the weekends. I usually have a mora or some fixed blade in the car but I wouldn't carry it around in a bag. There's no need for it. A svord peasant may end up in my bag for picnics along with a sak electrician in the pocket for general stuff.

I follow along very similar lines bud. Neon orange Mora in passenger door compartment with duct taped fire steel and chunk of juicy fatwood. One of my smaller Leatherman in the container below radio. Those are the forget about it, until I need to change a wiper blade tools.
