Is there anything "like" a Strider???

I'm having a VERY tough time finding something that has everything I want, or more importantly something that doesn't have anything I don't want. I like the idea of a framelock, but I'm not "thrilled" about metal (titanium) handles. Something that I've seen that I like is that Strider has the framelock on the lock side, but a G10 scale on the other side. Are any other knives made that are constructed similarly? If not, are there any G10 handled knives with similar strength in a liner lock?

If I were to go with a metal handle, I would love to be able to afford a Sebenza, but I've only got about $200. Is the Bradley Alias a worthy alternative? How about the Mini Skirmish?

To be a little more specific about what I'm looking for, I'd like a blade length of about 3" with a plain edge and no blade coating (black, camo, etc.). The knife will be used for mild daily tasks, no cutting down trees or field dressing game. Thanks in advance for any leads or info!!!

Rick hinderer XM-18 is the knig of framelocks with G-10 handles IMO.

they are a steal at 395.00

is there anything like a strider for 200? No, I dont think so. I would look at Zero Tolerance knives by Kershaw and top shelf BM Spyd and Kershaw for blades made from good steel. I dont think the lock in any of the 3 I mentioned top knives will have any issues if you are not missusing your knife.

It sounds like you do NOT want something like a Strider. Since you do not like the G-10 on one side and titanium on the other. It does make for a secure grip. But, since you do not like that......$200. Maybe you could find a very used Sebenza for that. Ummm, how about a Mini-Skirmish? If you want EXCELLENT G-10 handled knives, I suggest you look at Spyderco. The Manix & Mini-Manix (do not let the word Mini fool you.) ARE INCREDIBLE knives!! They are tanks!! I would also suggest a G-10 Spyderco Miliatry or ParaMilitary. I hope this helped!!

If you look around a bit, you can get a Buck-Strider 881. It's super beefy, designed by Strider, heat treated by Paul Bos, with a 3" ATS-34 blade with no lame camo. It has a very tough titanium liner lock and G10 scales. I have both the 880 (the big one) and the 881 and I like the 881 much better. You should be able to find one for around $100. But they're getting scarce, as they've been discontinued.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

If you read my original post, it says that I DO like the G10 on one side and the framelock open on the other side. I'm looking for knives other than Strider that are made that way. I'm not sure why, but I'm not a huge Spyderco fan. I have looked at the Mini Skirmish online, but the toughest part about finding a knife I like is that there is no place I can go to actually hold or see one in person... hence my questions here. Thanks.

so you're looking for G10 w/ no titanium.

how about a spyderco manix? that's G10 scales on both sides (i know you said you weren't a fan of spyderco, but take a look).

mini skirmish is a great knife, but full titanium handles through and through.

as moonwilson said earlier, check out buck-striders folder lineup. you can find them for cheap on ebay. they make an EXACT copy of the SNG but no titanium, so maybe that's what you're looking for. it's a linerlock, not a framelock, but there's a version w/ G10 scales on both sides.

good luck.

Emerson HD-7. I picked up a lightly used one for $150. One heck of a nice knife from an honest maker.

I'm surprised you don't want a titanium framelock. (I would have suggested the bradley alias - it is very well made and cuts very well, never mind the hoolabaloo behind the design. in fact, I think it's the best sub-200 framelock in the market).

if you're looking for dual G-10 scales (they will be either linerlocks, compression locks or lock-backs), than you may want to consider spyderco's military, paramilitary or manix.

Or you could get yourself an waved Emerson Commander with the thicker liners (2006 onwards). The heat treat on emersons is very good, never mind the problems with the loosening pivot (loctite cures it) or chisel grind (it's easy to sharpen).

If you can up your budget a little, you can get the Strider RCC linerlock (with dual G10 scales) for only $300. All the goodness of a Strider in the configuration you want.

I'm not looking for G10 without titanium, just a handle setup similar to Strider with no "skin" on the framelock side. Really the only reason that I don't want the titanium handles is that I'm afraid they will get scratched up in my pocket. I am pretty good with scotch brite and have done "finish jobs" on several S&W revolvers, but I don't know if titanium will buff like stainless. I know that sounds like a weak reason, but I am really anal about keeping my stuff nice.

I've got a Buck/Strider 881 but it is kinda thick, built like a tank, though. I'd love to buy a Sebenza, but I don't think anyone is selling one for $200. Would you guys say the Bradley Alias II or the Benchmade Mini Skirmish were a better buy if I went for a titanium handle? Thanks!

Unless its too big for you buy you a Zero Tolerance 0200.

It sounds like you want a Strider PT though, or perhaps one of the Buck Mayo TNT knives in S30V or if that is too much one with a different blade steel maybe.

The CRKT S2 is often referred to as the poor man's Sebenza. I have had a couple of these in my shop for pocket clips and must say I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of it. Nice knives for the bucks spent.

How about a Darrel Ralph Maxx Q? G10 on both sides and a really thick liner lock (as thick as frame locks!). $200.

The Mini-Skirmish is nice...I love the design, but my thumb slips on the hole most of the time. I handled one and the large Skirmish 630 at a local store.

If you're open to other lock types, consider the Kershaw Spec Bump. 3D machined G10 on both sides with a Stud Lock. About $105-$125.

Sorry! My mistake. Well, if you had more $$$, you can't beat a Hinderer XM-18; but they are $385. Um, like has been mentioned, there are the Buck/ Strider options are in your price range. $200..... Hmmmmm.

You want a framelock with titanium only on the lock side, g-10 on the other? And you're willing to spend $ for a custom? If so, just go out and find the knife you like, then contact the maker and see if he'll make you a knife with the one g10 handle on the side. Lots of custom makers will do, well, "custom" work like this!

Love those Hinderer knives bigjimslade linked to

Another vote for the ZT 0200, I have one and it is built like a tank. I also dislike the titanium on one side and the G10 on the other, with this knife you have a super thick liner with G10 on both sides. It is the nicest production folder that I have ever owned.

You might be happier saving for the knie you really want. Sounds like you want an XM-18 and I would too.

Whatever you get buy it to keep. Dont worry about keeping it pristine as that just aint what a knife wants. if you must have a nice one buy two, another later on to 'collect'.

Seems to me the only reason to want your knife pristine is if you want to sell it later. If so, dont buy it the first time!

Scratch em and use em and enjoy them like the maker and knife intends. You will be a happier fellow. Titanium is easy to buff out anyway I have heard. Find what you want and get that!
You deserve it!

Take a look at the Ontario knives Retribution 2 designed by Jerry Hossom. It is a liner lock but the liners on this knife are as thick as most framelocks. Beware these are big knives and the handle on the small one is over one inch in width.

but for your purposes, whatever they may be, seriously consider the Benchmade 710.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

The ZT200 is pretty cool, although I haven't had the chance to handle it in real life. If they made a mini non coated version, I'd be all over it.

Hinderer's knives are AMAZING and worth saving up for, although I can relate to the difficulty of dropping 400 on a knife.

You might consider just saving up and getting the one you really want, the Strider. As someone mentioned, the RCC is only 300ish, but does have dual g10, not the 50/50.

Bradley cutlery made a strider clone with half and half, but as i call, it was pretty expensive. 230ish. Well, I suppose that's pretty close to your price range.

I've played with a couple Aliases in person and they seemed like great knives. They look nicer than Sebenzas to me in that they're not just flat slabs, they've got a little shape and contour to them. Even if sebenzas were exactly the same price, provided I got to inspect the knives in person, I'd buy an Alias. Sebenza does deserve a lot of credit for its apparently perfect QC (although, for all we know, Bradley will have it too).
