Is tightneing the pivot screw the only way to try and eliminate blade play? Other than that are there no other cures?

Right now I know ALOT about the firearm world, but next to nothing about the knife world. So Ill be asking alot of questions, please dont get angry :)

there are a number of solutions, depending on the construction of the knife.

For lockbacks, I don't know anything...especially since the only ones I've owned have been riveted together, and I can't get at the mechanism.

What knife/knives are you having play with?

Well, if it has their proprietary screws, then there's no way to get at the mechanisms to fix it up.

With my Al Mar SERE, there was a little vertical play because the liner was not bent far enough, it wasn't exerting enough force to really wedge the blade open. I took it apart, bent the liner a little more, and now there's absolutely no play.

It all depends on what's going on inside the knife, with the relationship between the lockface, the pivot, and the stop pin. Sometimes you can't do anything about it because of tolerances of the pieces...sometimes you can. :)

good luck.

If I buy the wrench that can unsrew the proprietary screws will I be able to get to the mechanisms???

Thanks!

i got tired of blade play myself so i switched to FB and never looked back. i am curious about the spydie compression lock though. the lil temp. just looks cool

tear it apart and teach yourself a thing or two. ;)

and then teach the rest of us....:D

agreed. the only real way to learn how it works is to see for yourself.

You will figure it out once you have it apart...fixing the play is another matter altogether.

On most of my knives with solid bolsters I'd set it on an anvil and use a hammer and sharp center punch.

On a cheap knife with crimped-on scales it takes some playing with.

On my good folding knives they have torx or allen screws that I can tighten.

My Gerber knife was used when I got it so I took it completely apart and cleaned & oiled it good. I was able to get a smooth tight motion out of it after that.

If the knife doesn't come apart, a lot of penetrating oil and a lot opening & closing of the blade.

I have seen special screw driver bits for sale at Harbor Freight Tools and American Science & Surplus. If there are any industrial fasteners stores in your area they may carry the bits too.

But I havent been able to cure myself of playing with knives either.

I didn't find anything noteworthy here until I came upon this little gem....WTF! Enlighten me as to how this procedure will REDUCE blade play!?!?

It depends on how much gunk there is inside. It's amazing how built-up dirt can interfere with the fit and action. I got a second-hand Sebenza once with so much dirt in it, it almost looked like an extra black washer.

I HATE bladeplay - my AXIS benchmades and emersons have ZERO bladeplay. Sebenzas also have none. The only time I'll allow slight bladeplay is w/ FRN spydercos.
