because i baught some years ago in an street market in Bulgaria, an old khukuris that probably had travelled a lot to arrived there !
Visibly it has been used previously as a hammer, etc...

My question is: between the khukuri and the two littles knifes, there is a small leather "pocket" which could be inserted (or removed !) from there.
It is around 5 cm long, 4 cm large and very thin (like 1/2 cm)

Maximum, you could put inside may-be some coints, or a pinch of tea, herbs or whatever..

Did anybody see what i mean, and what is is used for?
if you have any idea, let me know !

thank!

fred

My understanding is that they would keep some dry tinder and a flint for starting a fire in the pouch. The small unsharpened knife is a chakma, and it would be used with the flint to strike a spark into the tinder. The spark would ignite the tinder, which would then be used to start a fire.

There is a thread about this here.

thanks a lot Ferguson, i found someone that has the same thing :

"The sheaths for the older style knives have a pouch for tinder in the back, behind the tools. My HI hanuman has this, but it's quite perplexing. It's a leather sleeve open at both ends. "

i found interesting suggestion for this sleeve !

and with the help of "google":

"The scabbards (dap) are two-piece wood frames covered with the leather of goat, water buffalo or elephant and may have a brass or metal chape though early pieces will have no point protection. In many cases the leather is tooled, dyed black or dark brown and military pieces can be found with a web, cloth or canvas cover. The very fancy scabbards with extensive silver or gold work are called kothimoras. There will also be two small knives called a karda and chakmak (fig. 6) attached to small scabbards directly behind the scabbard's throat: the former used as a small utility knife and the later used to hone the blade or strike a small piece of flint that was carried in a pouch (khalti or goji) that was attached to these small scabbards. Most military knives of mass production from WWI and WW2 will not have these knives or pouch, but the kukris now issued have returned to having the small knives with an eye towards tradition."

I think an assortment of small items might end up in the pouch for safe, secure storage. The one khuk I have with such a pouch had several razor blades inside, in addition to some tinder.

Gurkha version of swiss army knife. Well, it is, really!

Hey, funny thing: I got an old WWII khuk on eBay and in the pouch -- a really rusty old double-edged "safety razor" blade. I could just make out a few script letters on it.
