Is there something I missed? Or do these guys have it all wrong? Check out www.worldwideknives.com and go to the Emerson section. Scroll down to the CQC section and read the little blurb they have about Mr. Emerson. I have an American Handgunner magazine from March/April 1998, that has an article about Emerson Knives. In the article, they talk about the CQC6, the "knife that started it all for Ernie". From what I have seen in other articles both in print and on the web, I was under the impression that Ernie started out as a custom knife maker and licensed Benchmade to make the CQC7, then started his own production company and took the license back. Am I correct, and these guys at World Wide Knives just making it up as they go along?

Just curious,

Flinx,
They are making it up as they go along. Ernie was a custom knifemaker long before he liscensed Benchmade to produce the CQC7 model. He made custom knives generally referred to as Pre-Tacs,Vipers,etc., folders and fixed. To my knowledge, some special forces guys(SEAL's?), wanted Phill Hartsfeld to make them folding versions of his tanto knives. He told them he didn't make folders and suggested they talk to Ernie. Long story short, they became extremely popular, and Benchmade approached Ernie about doing a production model. He wanted to keep the 6 as purely a custom, so he designed the CQC7. I don't believe Ernie ever worked for Benchmade but just leased the design to them. When the lease expired, he decided to start his own production company, so he didn't renew with Benchmade.
Ok you suspects, if I got any of it wrong, let me know.

To my knowledge, he never worked for any knifemaker but himself. When he started making knives, he was an engineer for an aerospace company in California, and already had a solid background in fabricating steel.

I do think he got some guidance from Hartsfield and Terzuola after he got serious about making knives.
