Is there such thing as a wing screw with a point?

I'm looking for a wing screw (like a wing nut but a screw) that has a point on it for use on wood as opposed to metal. If such a thing exists it would be the perfect set screw for socketed knives/tools like the Bushman. Sockets may be easier to haft as a spear in the field, but without a set screw you could lose it off the end in no time! And yet it would defeat the purpose if you had to carry a screw/screwdriver around with you everywhere, too. Does such a thing exist, or am I going to have to jury-rig one? :p

I have never seen one. However you should carry a multitool as part of your survival gear anyway. Just throw a couple appropriately sized wood screws into the kit as well.

I do carry one anyway. A Victorinox Spirit. And a dedicated compact screwdriver kit. :p

However, what if I lose it/become separated from it? I like the idea of being able to just twist in the set screw and go. Like I said, I can jury rig one (file a point on it and a cutting groove that would start the cut) but was wondering if anything like that existed already. It would also be faster/easier to transfer between spear and knife form that way.

maybe try a screw eye?? Could always put a stick in it to make it easier to turn.

Could make a good loop to add cord to for additional lashing or retrieval, too. Good thinking!

Edit: Also could be attached to the knife via a lanyard as well!

I was going to suggest one of those "L" shaped devices, like a bent wire with a partial screw, used to make a wall hanger, but the eye screw seems a better application. I was trying to fit a fish or frog gig to a stick while in the field.

I like the eye screw better...it allows you to insert a rod to increase leverage to screw in. If you could rig up an attachment to your blade head or frog gig, it would be a great point to attach a retrieval cord. Good idea:thumbup:

Retrieval cords are thought to have been used on some Viking throwing spears, providing some realistic basis for the magical property of Odin's spear, Gungnir, to return to the hand when thrown. :)

If you want it to last go over to Brownells dot com and look for an escutcheon.
Epoxy it in the wood and get the corresponding thumb screw for that machine thread.
The thumb screw makes for easy takedown of a backpacking .22 rifle as well !

Get a tough one (maybe stainless?) that won't get mis-shapen on rocks and stuff if you bash it!

The point being to make it expedient to mount it as a spear using a field-fashioned shaft. Good idea for a more carefully crafted one though. :)
