Is this a Connecticut head?

I think it weighs 2.5 pounds

I just got it and am trying to figure out what kind of handle to put on it. I held it up to a 32 inch handle and the handle just looked too big for it. A 19 inch handle looks too small. There aren't other sizes in the hardware stores here so I'll have to order one so I want to get it right.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kim

Initial thought was more of a dayton pattern, but it looks like it could be a conny too hard to say without getting my hands on it. If it is in that 2.5 lb range maybe a 28 inch boys axe handle would suit u. But in the end it's what u want.

Yeah I'd agree with operator - looks like a dayton pattern to me with a somewhat worn down bit. The blade isn't wide enough comparatively to the overall length of the head for it to be a connecticut. It's also somewhat rare to find a vintage boy's axe (2.5lb) in a pattern other than a dayton or michigan..

The Connecticut is the only one that slopes down (broadens) on the one (lower) side of the front of the blade.

It's possible. Patterns varied in shape and design from manufacturer to manufacturer, especially non-dayton patterns like jerseys and rockaways. I'd have to say that this doesn't look like the size or design of the Connys I'm used to seeing, but those are usually Kellys or Collinses. Wasn't there just a "What makes a Connecticut" thread?

This is my Keen Kutter CT. The eye is much bigger than the one in your picture. which also points to the boys axe

boy's axes are fine axes. Plan on getting rid of a bunch as I find I just don't use them enough.

That is a fine point about the eyes on "boys axes" I just recently started acquiring heads to hang and I am finding heads in the 2-2.6lb range with eyes ranges from a full sized axe eye to closer to a standard "hatchet" eye to one that is pretty short and rounded, closer to a taperd maul style eye.

Not that it is a bad thing! I just got a Norlund 2.4lb head in with full sized eye and have a HH 28" straight octagon handle that will fit it perfectly.

OP- looks like the bit needs thinning to make up for being shortened by sharpening and a reduction of the poll for balance. After measuring the eye, I bet a HH 28" octagon handle would ne very nice on there. Or maybe a CT replacement Boys axe handle.
If you have the time to tinker, fixing these axe heads up again can be very satisfying.

It does make the finding of and fitting of a handle more interesting though. As many have said before- ALWAYS measure the eye before ordering/buying a handle.
