Is this a counterfeit?

I picked this up online for a price that I suspect is too good to be true. But now that it finally arrived, it looks pretty legit to me!?

Have they recently stopped using the boye dent? The construction hardware on yours is different then mine of which Im certain is authentic. Maybe they are using different hardware now. Best of luck no less.

Absolutely a fake: None of the screw positions even remotely match, and the curvature of the front of the handle is the very first thing that jumped out at me.

Handle texture is different, and the depth of the edge bevels really shallow, not to mention the dull point... Depth of the release notch is too shallow as well.

Looks like everyone's knife is a fake since the authentic one has only one torx screw on the pile side, while the rest posted have three.

I believe that's a Phillips screw on the pile side of the picture, and it looks like Phillips screws in the pocket clip, but I can't see those real clearly.

Unless things have changed, the Civilian does not come in a box. It should be in a pouch.

Yes, the absence of the Boye dent might make it a fake, but the early models didn't have the dent as well. I'm not sure when G10 was an option, and when the Boye dent was used.

The blade pivot position is way too forward for any model. The shallow edge bevel really stands out against a real one. The pouch is a great observation, as it would indeed be expensive to fake.

Spyderco pouches can be acquired from many seller and anyways he bought a used model, so maybe it has no pouch.
One of the details which can be wrong on a counterfeit piece is the grind: is OP's knife hallow grind? Just an idea, maybe I'm wrong.

I believe it is a fake. I saw one like this at a gun show recently. The G-10 is rough, the screws are different, there is no Boye detent in the lock and there was no pouch. The version that I saw had 2 liners.

In Chris M's YT vid - Spot the Fake Sypderco Civilian!! - he says, amongst other telltale signs ...

~ Fake's 'blood groove' bends more
~ Fakes come in boxes

BTW, on my Spyderco boxes, the registration mark is lower and closer to the spider's leg.

Yeah the lack of Boye dent was the thing that stood out for me, but I figured that it could just be an old/new model.

Does a legit Civilian only have one liner?

The consensus seems to be that it's fake. It was only $20, so no big deal; it's not like I'm ever going to actually carry it anyway.

Definite fake. No Boye dent and VG-10 would be "iffy", at best, since it appears to have been added to the Civilian before the change to VG-10. No Boye dent and the "bug" logo on the blade screams FAKE!!!!! since the logo wasn't added to the Civilian's blade until several years after the Boye dent and VG-10 both became standard.

Well, it will never be a safe queen, so go ahead and use it and abuse it like a junk yard rat...when it breaks, you're only out $20.00. Lesson to be learned here is to buy only from reputable and authorized Spyderco dealers. If a dealer sells you a fake, then a note to Spyderco would be in order. The bottom line is you get what you pay for; oh, and fleaBay is no place to entrust your hard earned dollars.;)
