Hey looking to buy this from a gentleman on armslist, my concern is it doesn't have the Spyderco logo on the left side like the new one's do( or all?), Maybe this is older or it could be a fake? I'm also assuming the HT was the same if it's an older model as the new ones.

Thanks for the help!

Posting Pictures - Photobucket

Open a free account at www.photobucket.com (or some other free web-hosting site)

"Upload" pictures from your computer/device to your Photobucket account using Photobucket "Upload" button in top tool bar and then the "Choose" button.

This last will take you to your Windows Picture page where you "open" a picture to upload it to PhotoBucket.

When the bar has filled, the picture is uploaded.

Left click on the small image of the picture that appears.

To the right of the large image that will now appear, left click on the bottom "IMG" link. This is the "copy" step in Windows "copy and paste."

Go to your post here at BladeForums and "paste" the link in your post.

THANKS

Ya that logo not being there is bugging me i havent found a single picture of a southfork without it on the net yet

It is a spyderco knife. Taichung Taiwan is present at the ricasso. Looks ground down, so the edge should be significantly thicker than the original spyderco version or the phil wilson customs. Whether fake or real I would pass on this knife. Even if it is a real spyderco the edge has been thickened.

The location of the pins and the "grain"? in the micarta look legit. However, the bug missing is odd, the overall blade dimensions seem off without being able to put my finger on why exactly. Plus, the stippling or numerous hardness-testing dimples on the signature side is downright weird.

Looks like it's been sharpened down a whole lot then had the edge redone, must have been some serious use to get s90v that worn down. Looks like at least a few mm of material are missing. If it's a crazy low price it may be worth it. Maybe factor in the price of a regrind into your negotiations.

That knife looks fine to me. I'd imagine someone was testing with the knife which is why the hardness has been tested a few times. They are good knives and this has lots of life left in it. I'd be fine with it personally.

Joe

It's had an amateurish sharpening on a power grinder. There would be some risk it was over heated.

Hi Guys, it is a legit Spyderco and I can solve part of the mystery. Early on I did a few re-grinds and this looks to be one of them.I no longer do that for obvious reasons. This one appears to have been though some testing of some sort. The Spyder is gone since it was ground off. My logo was also ground off but replaced after the work was done. This one has had the lower blade edge curve modified from the standard profile. I did check the hardness as I remember but looks like there were more done subsequently. It is still a useful knife but is a departure from the original design and shape. Hope this helps, Phil

Looks like you found a gem, re ground by the man himself. I say buy it or give us the info I bet a lot of bf members would love it, I know I would and I already have a southfork.

I thought so, but I figured you would chime in soon. :)

Thanks Mr. Wilson !

I contacted the seller and had him give me the thickness behind the edge and the spine he said the spine was 3mm which comes to .118 which sounds right. But that the behind the edge was .8-.9 mm which is .003. That sounds like it has been converted to a fishing knife? I was going to use this on elk and deer, anyone opinion on if that's ground down a little too much?

I don't see how that knife could possibly be .003" behind the edge and still have an edge bevel that wide. I believe somebody has their numbers wrong drebs.

Judging from the looks of that knife it might have been reground to .003 behind the edge then used too hard, damaging the edge. It has obviously been sharpened back a LOT so I am betting that's what happened.

Way off about .015" off or more. LOL

I would say that is in the .020" to .025" range, guessing from the picture.

Your right it was .8 mm which is .030 inches... So if it was re ground by Phil and its this thick again means it's seen A Lot of use eh?

My humble advice....
This is a very special piece.

Phil Wilson is a highly respected knife maker, and this collaboration with Spyderco is a great knife.

Not sure how many where re-ground and tested by Phil in this manner, but regardless, that's a collectors dream.

I would either safe queen it, or sell it and and use that money to buy two or three similar knives....

Just my humble opinion, I know a ton more people are thinking this as well though, how could it not cross your mind?!??
