Is this a Filipino sword?

This is a piece I recently acquired, but cannot quite identify. It somewhat resembles a Pinuti, but the hilt is rather different. Has anyone seen something like this before?

I don't this it is a filipino sword. By the shape it looks like a Chinese sword i think the call them Dao. You see there use a lot in Wushu.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, those are the two options I have been wavering between. The argument for Filipino comes from the general shape of the blade, and in size and shape is alot like this from Kris Cutlery:
espada.jpg

Both grips also have that polygonal cross-section. The European-ish hilt may be attributed to Spanish influence, or Dutch if the piece originates from nearby Indonesia.

On the other hand, it may be both Filipino/Indonesian AND Chinese, because KunTao (Kuntaw) is a martial art practiced by expatriate Chinese in these lands, and which has brought its weapons along with it. These Chinese are primarily from Fujian, and they pronounce "Dao" as "To," I think.

Personally,

I think it looks more Filipino than Chinese. Here are some links to pix of Chinese Darn Dao:

To my eye neither the blade profile or handle look Chinese to me. There's no curve to the spine as there is on a Darn Dao. Also, this sword has a much more accute point than the Darn Dao. On the other hand, the blade definitely looks similar to a lot of the Filipino swords that I've seen. The two piece, brass & wood handle looks like several of the Filipino swords I've seen, though the brass guard and pommel seem to be of foreign influence but I think it's more European in style. Also, Darn Daos tend to have the circular guards that you see in the pictures on the links I referenced.

I'm no expert, but I'd rule out the Chinese connection (though it was an entertaining movie) and guess that it's Filipino with some Spanish influence. Any way you cut it though (sorry, bad pun

), it's a beautiful sword and I'm quite jealous!

Thanks Dave! Yup, over on the Ethnographic Edged Weapons Forum http://www.vikingsword.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000122.html
we've got some very strong leads that have all but dismissed the Chinese pedigree. I was quite sure from the beginning that it wasn't purely Chinese, for the reasons you gave -- guard, grip faceting, etc.

BTW, that KC Darn Dao is lovely, isn't it? I could definitely go for one of those...

I'll have to get over there and see what's up with your sword! Thanks for the link.

Yeah, that KC Darn Dao is beautiful, it's one of my favorites from the KC line. My absolute favorite from KC is their Barong, followed by the now discontinued Talibon and the Darn Dao ... and the Celtic sword ... can't leave out that Celtic sword.

I love the two swords you posted pix of. Where did you find them?

Btw, I think the Barong would be the ultimate in Home Defense Cutlery. It's short blade is perfect for tight hallways and it looks EVIL ... like it WANTS to lop off an arm or a head. If I was in someone's house and they came down a hallway with a Barong, it'd be right out of the Lynard Skynard song "... Gimme three steps toward the door .... Gimme three steps mister and you'll never see me no more!"

Later!

Dave

1. The way I see it, the Barong is good because it allows three options -- you can:
A. Stab with the long point for a quick kill;
B. Chop off limbs for dramatic effect; or
C. Use the wide flat of the blade to slap the guy around, if you don't want to kill him. Sorta like a big metal paddle. Ah, corporal punishment...

2. If you like both the Barong and the Celtic leaf blade, check this out kind of combines both:
hina3o.jpg

It's a 'Hinalung' from the Igorots of Luzon, and is on the same Ethnographic Weapons site.

3. Dave, do you have all of those pieces from KC? G**, I wish I'd ordered the Talibon; I was always planning to, but never got around to it...

4. Donna, you should talk to Lee Jones about swapping forum links. I think it could produce alot of cross-fertilization between collectors and martial artists.

OK, I'm just being silly now, but I think this 16" model kit, armed with a Barong instead of the kitchen knife here, would make a great display!

Donna,

How could you NOT love a Barong ????
wink.gif

Ruel,

LOVE that Hinalung! Yes, I do have a thing for leaf-shaped blades

This one kind of reminds me of a Smatchet. I like that the whole thing is forged from one piece of steel because it pretty much rules out the chance of the blade coming loose from the handle. Speaking of the handle, it looks like the handle might be capable of accepting a stick to make a panabas or sibat (spear) in a pinch. Any thoughts on this? The only thing I would change (just from viewing the Hinalung) is that I'd wrap the entire handle for better grip.

No, I don't own any KC blades but I've seen and handled a few. I have a baby on the way (due any day now) and I'm finishing our basement so extra $$ is non-existant right now, but the KC Barong is definitely on my list of things to get. There might be hope for a KC Talibon too. I was talking to the people at KC recently and asked about the status of their new line. They're expecting to release the new line later this year and it might include an improved Talibon.

The only "big" blade I own is a 20" (OAL) Chainpuri Khukuri with a 14.5" blade that was hand forged by a village knife smith in Nepal. It's a lighter, quicker, more weapon-like version of the Khukuri. You can see pics of a Chainpuri or the very similar Sirupati on the Himalayan Imports Forum. It's no Barong, but it's pretty evil looking and could definitely lop off a few pieces.

BTW Ruel, that picture is cool. A display ???? ... you must be a truly sick individual ... I like that!

A barong would be very cool looking, or a panabas! How about this for a Halloween costume (?) ... one of those black, "Grim Reaper" robes with the hood; a panabas (I think one with a curved blade would look best for this application); and a good make up job on your face. The kids and most of the adults would run like hell if you came to the door dressed like that

Wow those are really nice... wish I had the $$$ right now.

Oh that is a model? I remember that thing frome the Trilogy of Terror movie. Scared the heck out of me when I was little.

Ruel,

I did a search for "hinalung" on the Ethnographic Weapons site, but didn't get any matches. I'd like to read the thread on it, so I'd appreciate it if you could post a link here or tell me how to find it.

Thanks.

Dave.

1. Oops, sorry Dave, the image comes from an article attached to the site's homepage: http://www.vikingsword.com/ethsword/ifugao/index.html
As you can see, it's a "Hinalung and Pinahig" page and is still under construction so it has no text yet. But I'm sure if you post a question on the forum, somebody there will have an answer.
Although I don't have a hinalung myself, I do have two pinahigs, which are well made and have good cutting power.

2. "... you must be a truly sick individual ..." I try my best..!

3. "Halloween costume(?)" How about Darth Maul?! Like you said, the hinalung looks like a socketed spear; you could stick one on each end of a staff to get a double-headed spear like DM had in SW-E1.

4. KC: I'm like you, just waiting for some cash to free up...

5. Ropaki, thanks for identifying the origin of the Doll. Everyone seems to have seen it before, but no one know where!

1. Oh yes, my congrats too; how thoughtless of me to not mention it! Also, you asked where I got the swords: they both came from David Brown in Vermont balsamc@cdh.net

2. Donna, the "Terror Doll" model is available from monstersinmotion.com. It would be really cool if you had it standing over the prone body of the Rockwell statue...

3. PC? I actually was going to say "p*** slap" but caught myself. Something about the internet just loosens the tongue!

And the Rockwell statue's head should be cut off (a "saws all" would be ideal) and placed near the statue's feet. For extra affect, dab a little red paint on the newly severed areas.

I bet any neighbors that might have been annoying you, will suddenly become the most congenial people towards you.

Thank you to Donna and Ruel for the congratulations! Now if we can just convince the little guy (yes it was confirmed) to come on out. He's in the starting blocks but has apparently decided to chill out for a while.

Take it easy.

Dave.
