Is this a forge? If not, what is it?

Thanks for the pciture, love seeing somethingnew and learning something at it.

BUT, I must admit that the first thing that came to mind, at least with that first picture, is that it was nothing more than some kinda redneck mailbox. :D

One way to get rid of the junk mail.

ROTFLMAO!:D:D:D

I needs me one-a those!

Seein as how you uppity takin baths every day non rednecks don't know what it is I guess I'll explain it to ya. Hell I think my great grandaddy still holds the patent on that thing.
It IS good for shoein horses, and that tends to be the accepted use today. But originally it was used to stop mailbox bashin. Aint no such thing as junk mail when ya live in a cabin an use a creek bed for a driveway. Companies just don't find it to be much of an investment sendin stuff to ya.
For some reason, the neighbors thought it was kind of uppity for ol grandaddy to even have mailbox. Turns out he was the first one to put one up in that neck of the backwoods. So naturally, the family he was feudin against tried to knock it over. Thats when he got the great idea to make it into a flame throwin mail box. It'l light a louisville slugger at 90 miles an hour :D ya just got lengthen the cord on that snap start so you can hit it from the front porch.;)

I'm a Mountaineer, not a cowboy. Looks to me like ol'shappa should be about right. I'll take his word on that one. I think you got a forge for at the least HT'ing carbon steels.

Had I saw it I would have bid more than the winning $5 for it.

Looks like a heater for the old-fashioned soldering irons. Would need insulation to get up to forging temp range.

Thanks for all the input.
It pumps out enough BTUs for light forging without insulation, but I'm going to make it a new top with castable refractory and Satanite. The neat trick is going to be getting the tank refilled. I don't think it's in line with the newer specs. I'll come up with something. It's going to be just so cool to have a portable forge. :)
The mailbox comments entertain me way more than usual, because that's what I was thinking of using for a framework.
