Is this a good buy?

No, at 17.95 + 7.95 shipping, you will pay almost 26.00 for it.

You can get that model at any Wal-Mart for 19.95 + tax which will be way less than 7.95.

I have 2 of this series now, and the 440C is great!

Yes, these are Chinese made.

So do you think these are as good as the American made ones or better?

I have a Cadet/Trio (the box says #303 but I was told it is a #373 with a mislabled box) that I think is very well made and I am more than pleased with it. I recently gandered some of the other chinese knives by Buck and noticed they are not as well made.

I got a 373 in one of my trades. Gave it to my Dad. It seemed ok. Was super sharp. But there is still just something about these old 300 series that are made in the US

For what it's worth, I examined about 30+ 373 Chinese made ones at a store before I bought one, some had gaps between the backsprings that were minor. 2 nights later I got a chance to examine about 25+ 303 American Made ones at a different store and to be honest, they had just as many gaps as the Chinese made ones.

I could not really see that they were any better than the Chinese mades ones and they average 8-10 dollars more for the comparable model.

Given that and 440C over 420HC, which I admit is a personal thing as I doubt there is much performance difference between them but I really like 440C, I have no problem using the Chinese mades ones.

I have one of the 371 Stockmans (Stockmen?), and it's great. My only Buck American 300-Series is a 309, so it is hard to compare because of the size difference, but my Chinese-made 371 has just as good of fit and finish and seems to cut just as well. You can't tell which one is made in China until you see the "China" stamp.

Being made in China often means something is inferior, but with the Buck 300s, I think the Chinese-made ones are fine and are a great deal. You get wood handles instead of plastic, and save a few bucks to boot. You may want to handle a few of them to try and find a good one, though, as I expect the quality control to be lower. So I would suggest going to Wal Mart and trying out some 371s rather than ordering online.

As for 420HC or 440C, I am not sure which is better. But I really like Buck's 420HC, probably because of their heat treat. So I would think the USA 420HC is a better steel than the 440C with the Chinese 300s. But from my cutting experience with both, they are very similar.
