It's a Opinel 6 with his name etched on the handle and his initials on the blade.

I don't believe it's possible for a dude with two testicles to NOT like a knife as a present..... even if he never shown interest in knives. So I think you're safe.

I think most men would appreciate this, then again men like knives soo...yea.
In all seriousness I think its really cool and will make a great gift.
Who knows, might even get him into this lovely money pit of a hobby haha. Always good to have more people support what we knife enthusiasts do.

It's a nice gift, knife person or not. However, a non-knife person might take years before they actually put it to use, and then they will thank you long after you have forgotten about it.

That's a GREAT gift for a non knife person. Here's how it works:

You now get your friend a bottle opener that attaches to their keychain. Titanium is awesome (mine is engraved with "BEER IS GOOD"). Your friend will thank you for it and now you don't have to worry about being without a bottle opener when you're with this friend. It's your gift to you.

Carry your friend's knife whenever you plan to see them. Deploy their knife whenever you see them struggling with a simple task that could quickly be taken care of with a good knife. They won't ever have to worry about needing a knife when you're with them. It's a great gift from you to them.

I've done this about 30 times and I NEVER need my bottle opener anymore AND it makes it easy to rotate knives. :)

This is a perfect gift, I do it frequently.
You should also teach him the old, old custom of exchanging a coin (any coin) in exchange for the knife.
I think it is good to keep these old customs alive.

Yes, but, next time, you should find out before you actually go out and get it.

+1.

But I personally don't think an Opinel is a good gift for a non-knife person, especially if it's a carbon steel variant. The Virobloc and the tendency of the wood to expand and stick the blade would be huge turnoffs if he's not able to fully appreciate the simplicity and supreme slicing ability of an Opinel. But for some reason, Opinels are common gifts, and most of them just end up in a drawer.

It's like giving a Zippo lighter as a gift. It's a very common gift, but it usually ends up relegated to a drawer, even for smokers, because most people can't appreciate the advantages of a Zippo and will quickly become frustrated when they find out the negatives: constant refilling, flint replacement, smelly lighter fluid that leaches out and stings the skin, etc.

I gift engraved Opinels all the time. Any advanced primate gets the hang of the lock immediately, and a pre-treatment of the pivot area with any petroleum product plus a sanding and oiling of the handle precludes 99% of future issues. They are great gifts and wonderful knives in general.

In many cultures, giving a knife as a gift without a coin or form of currency is a symbol of terminating the friendship/relationship. Just thought I'd let you know.

I thought of that. I got him the stainless version, and I put some Balistol on it. It's silky smooth now, but not silky enough that the lock will unlock.
