Hey guys and gals,

Just picked this one up. Don't know too much about it. Is this a good blade?

Lock up is like a vault, it's damn sharp, and it kicks like a friggin mule. It's also in mint condition, so I guess that's a plus.

:D

Can you tell us anything about it? What it's made from? Who made it?

Sounds like you like it though (and it looks nice to me) so I hearby declare it a "good knife". :)

a quick google search has shown that Severtech Spartan is in fact the right make and model of the above knife, They seem to be a small one-man company and have stopped production of the Spartans.

I did a quick search too. Didn't come up with much. Looks like nos blades go for anywhere from 3 to 6 hundy.

I'd like to know more about it but I'm too lazy to hunt all of the info down. Looks pretty cool. :)

Google some old threads for kicks.

It is indeed a Severtech Spartan.
From what I know, Severtech makes some really nice blades.
It also shows that it's a tough as nails no-nonsense auto.

I'd say you picked up quite a gem and hard to find.
Congratulations.

Yeah from my understanding these are pretty highly sought after. I think you've got something good there. I'm a bit jealous.

Yeah, he knows what he's got. Firefighters who are dumb don't live long enough to enjoy sliding down the pole.
Probably a super-knife. Closeout prices were $600; cost was over $300 several yrs ago. Enjoy
Found this post:
This is a custom-built (by Aaron Riley aka Severtech) Spartan. This is the big, drop-point style blade as opposed to the tanto. (Also featured in the movie Spartan w/ Val Kilmer if you're into those kinds of things) Blade is A2 tool steel hardened to 60 on the RC, 3.95" long with partial serrations. Blade is 3/16 of an inch thick. Scales are 6061 aircraft aluminum, button and pivot are 304 stainless, clip is powder-coated titanium. Weight is 6.5 oz with an overall length of 8.9." This knife would withstand anything short of a direct-hit from a tactical nuke, and even then it would probably just need some minor repairs. Rock solid, ZERO blade blay in any direction. Has been carried a few times, opened some boxes, but never sharpened.

Yeah, I could almost hear the smirk of the OP!

Hell yeah you've got one fine, tough knife! That A2 tool steel penetrated a drum in the last scene of the movie.

You not only have a well-built and tank-tough auto, but most likely a very rare one because, last time I read news about it MANY years back was that the maker wasn't interested in making them anymore, or at least in large and regular runs (at least that's what read. . .)

"Nice knife"

"I got if off an East German fellow. As I recall, he was rather reluctant to part with it"

I may have been messing around a bit, but meant no disrespect. Just wanted to show off my newest score!

From what I recall, the Spartans were even more rare than the tantos, as only a very few were made. I also read a post that the Spartan was Aaron Riley's "custom" built knife while the tantos were more of a production run produced in batches. No idea if that is true though.

Either way, I feel damn lucky to have this one!

:D

The Severtech is a hell of a knife. Made right here in Tucson. If you want a knife that you can carve your way out of (or into) a car with, it's a fine choice. Thick handles, rock solid lock-up, and extremely tough (and sharp) A2 tool steel. If you need more knife than a Severtech, then it's best to go with a large Busse or an axe or something. I owned 2 at one point, but sold both because I don't like tantos, and it was simply way more knife than I needed.

The Spartan model was only available by custom order. $500 instead of the normal $250. There aren't exactly a lot of regular Severtechs around, fewer with handles colors other than black. The Spartan is undoubtedly the rarest. Great find. Just remember that it's uncoated A2 steel, and that you should keep it oiled to prevent rust. By all means use it, and let a patina develop if that's your wish. But it can also be a hell of an investment if you don't use it, in which case you need to keep it as pristine as possible.

Oh well hey, at least you wasted some of my time huh? Jerk!

Totally kidding! I actually enjoy looking stuff up and learning about new (old) knife companies.

If it uses a coil spring like a Benchmade auto you should be fine storing it closed.
