Bear & Son® Carbon Steel Medium Toothpick with Yellow Delrin® Handle

What do you think? All suggestions and opinions welcome. If you have something else for me to take a look at let me know. (we all love pics)
Thanks

Depends. Bear can be a bit inconsistent with their QC. Are you buying sight-unseen? If so, just be warned that it may need returned. However, if the knife is one of the ones that didn't slip through, it's going to be good quality.

i have a small executive lock back that i've carried to work for awhile now as a dirty user (i treat it terrible, pry scrape and as a screwdriver) i use it this way because it really doesn't hold any kind of value to me, while it is a decent knife, it is roughly finished and doesn't feel as solid as my case or eye brands do, and i bought it through mac tools and if it breaks they replace it no questions asked. i would want to inspect it before i bought it also, as i have seen some not so good ones.

thanks
sam

S&S is correct and gives up some very sound advice.

tech1,

If your heart is set on a single blade Toothpick with hi-carbon steel and yellow scales then please let us know?. If you are more flexible as to blade count and perhaps additional pattern choices, then sound off as well because that will open up the discussion with more applicable suggestions as well?. How about the size of knife in the closed position you'd like to tote as well?. And what environment you'll be carrying her in?. Cutting chores that'll be expected and so on?.

This vital information will allow us to narrow it down a bit for the best possible cutting tool for your preference.

what the knife will be used for or my reasoning for wanting something of its nature. 1 to use when I dont need my fixed blade (around blade uneasy people). So F and F dont really mean that much to me (case) it's going to be a user. I do like it being made in usa. wouldnt have it any other way. I take pride in haveing things for a long time, i want something that will do that. Color is not a big deal to me, they almost all look ok. I do want a single blade. I also like 1095. Blade shape could be wider. I do like the size.
hope this helps if i can be of more help let me know, thanks

Why don't you go with a rough rider or kissing crane toothpick? Both are very nice for the price. You can also get a double bladed kissing crane yellow derlin toothpick. I love it. If you need help finding what I've spoke of message me and I'll send you a link to a favorite dealer of mine. :)

Something from CASE might fit the bill and over better reliability than Bear...

Carbon Sodbuster, Slimline Trapper?

Buck 302 single blade, but it's stainless.

You don't set a price limit, if you are prepared to spend more then a GEC 73 would fit the bill well, some are liner lock too. Ditto Queen Cutlery's Copperhead, that can come with liner lock if wanted.

tech1,

How does something like this suite you?.

She is just a fuzz over 4 1/8 inches in the closed position.. She's got a super slim profile for superb pocket carry. But she doesn't have 1095. However, it does have W.R. Case's current signature stainless steel. They call it 'Tru-Sharp' and although it is not hi-carbon, it does get quite sharp and holds an edge well for the typical cutting chores of the contemporary fellow who carries a pocket knife.. This one dry-shaves arm hair lickety split!

Best,

I do like the style ! i have narrowed it down between these two which one do you think?
Bear & Son® Carbon Steel Medium Toothpick with Yellow Delrin® Handle
Queen® City Large Toothpick with Black Cherry Smooth Delrin® Handle

if you were going to pick between these two which one would it be?

Between the 2 choices, it would be Queen City all the way because Queen is the better built slipjoint to be certain.

However, consider the size. What is 'Large' exactly?

is a 3" closed to small ? I guess I would really like to see a 3" next to a 5", do you have any such pics?

Why not spend time looking in some of the threads e.g. What Traditional Knife are You Totin Today or What Manly Task..there are lots of pictures to mull over patterns and blades. It will help you get ideas and perspective. Toothpicks and Slimline Trappers generally have slender blades, other styles have broader ones.

Comparing 3" knives to 5" is a huge difference. 3" is a small pocket knife, 5" is a massive unwieldy thing...even .25" makes a lot of difference as does weight, thickness, steel stock, number of bolsters, liners etc etc

3" closed is a very small knife, at least for traditional designs.
For comparison a standard size Swiss Army Knife is 3.5"

I think i have a couple knives that would show scale. Willgoy is right, a little bit makes a big difference.

You might want to tyr looking at a few youtube knife reviews. Even the most poorly done tend give a good view of how big the knife looks in someone's hand. :P

I'll try to take a couple pics tommorow showing a range of folder size categories side by side.

thank you i would like a pic, i ordered the Queen® City Mini Toothpick with Black Smooth Delrin® Handle
did i do ok, or am i going to be bumbed?

Ok, these aren't all traditionals but they show a range of sizes.

Left to right:
Boker G4 - this is a huge large knife 5" closed
Victorinox One Hand Trekker - A fairly large knife 4.5" closed
Boker Magnum Stockman - 3.5 closed
Wenger [unknown model] - A tiny knife, 2.5" closed.

I would say 3.5 to 4.0 closed is generally an average sized knife.

How big any particular knife will seem depends on more than just overall length though. For example, the Boker Stockman above is 3.5" but feels like a small knife because it's slim and the blades are thin.
