Is this a prelude to something worse?

Hi all,
So I was cleaning the quartermaster and saw this bubbling or something at the tip. Is this the blade finish coming off and if so will it keep peeling and just ruin the blade? Or is this something else and maybe fixable? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on it!

S35vn I'm pretty sure and the coating is listed as " Black limo tint coated" I got it used on the exchange and it's hard to find much info on them

Well I doubt it’s rust then.

It doesn't seem to be rust, it almost seems like an air bubble? Just for lack of a better explanation. I'm afraid now it's going to "pop" or something and then start the rest of the blade peeling. Never seen this so wasn't sure if that's something that can happen?

I’ll assume it’s a user based on the chip. If so I’d pick at the spot with a pin.

Oh definitely one of my main users. I'll try with the pin, appreciate the advice. It's one of my favorite knives so didn't want to do something without asking anyone first

If it's already bubbled then there's already intrusion of some kind. I wouldn't worry about attempting to pin-prick it. It probably won't fix anything, though, and I'd personally just pop the bubbled portion off entirely. Coatings wear.

I'm going to give that a try, will it start to peel more from that spot? Like this is just the beginning now that the costing is damaged and it will continue to peel?

Usually the key is in trying to remove the bubbled portion without allowing it to lever up any of the adjacent coating. After carefully removing the bubble, tape off the surrounding blade and buff the area with a little fine steel wool and it'll help abrade off any remaining ragged edges.

Depends on what “limo tint coating” is. If I were you I’d just use it and not worry about it. The more stuff like that wears, the better the knife looks IMO.

Scuffed up, scratched up, coated blades have so much character. I love when the coating starts to wear along the grind bevels from use.

It has already seperated from the steel, it will with use just flake off. S35VN can rust, still I would bet there is no rust under that bubble. Just go with the flow as the worn look is great.

I do agree that some things give the knife character, I just have the worst luck with that character being something extreme that more ruins the blade lol. I'm a little dis

I've never seen a blade coating bubble. Seen them peel, chip, scratch, fade, and wear with normal use, but never bubble.

My question would be- what did the blade come into contact with to make the coating bubble? Chemicals? Heat?

If it was something external (chemicals, heat), then avoiding such things would be best if you want to preserve the remainder of the finish.

But if the coating is just "going bad", then I'd say it's a lost cause and will likely continue to bubble and peel.

Either way I think the coating is already toast. Probably best to just get used to it looking beat.

It'd be best to just rub or sand that bubbled portion off. If it stays put for awhile, and if there're pores, tears or holes in it, it stands to trap & hold any moisture, dirt or anything else that might accelerate rusting & pitting of the steel underneath. Removing the bubble will let it stay clean & dry.
