Is this a rivet in the middle of the handle?

I started getting a few knives and I noticed in the middle of the handle was always this circle with other little circles in it, of different designs. Is this another type of rivet or what, and why do some look like more stylizing patterns?

Sounds like you're describing a mosaic pin. They're made from various tubing and filled with epoxy.

Are you talking about mosaic pins?

Also Loveless bolts kinda fit your description:

Mosaic pins are a hollow tube with other pins arranged in a pattern inside. Then colored epoxy is drawn up through the tube. When dried this forms a pretty solid pin that does have a pattern throughout its length. I buy these in foot long sections for my knife work. Most of the time depending on the application I cut these into 3/4" or 1" lengths prior to using them. When sanded and polished they provide the pattern to the pin you may be talking about. These have become a standard in my knives and I have used many hundreds of feet of mosaic pins.

Loveless bolts are named after legendary custom knife maker Bob Loveless. They are literally a screw with two nuts, one on each side of the handle. A two step rivet drill is used that makes a smaller hole for the screw and a larger one for the nut. When screwed down tight and sanded and polished ya get the look in the last two of my pics above. Kinda industrial and not as finished or refined as a mosaic but that handle is NOT coming off. I use them on all kitchen knives because of the damp environment that they work in and on most of my hunting specific knives.
