i have the oppurtunity to buy this for $10. is this an HI kukri? if not, is it worth $10? i plan to buy an HI kukri in the near future anyway but this one looks nice to me as maybe a wallhanger if not for actual use. thanks for looking.

Kenny

From the picture I can't see a way to ID it as HI. For $10 though, I would definitely buy based on the pic alone. As you say, at worst it will be a wall-hanger.

Kenny you didn't get hurt at $10.00 even if it is a wall hanger.:D
From first appearances I'm gonna take a WAG and say it's maybe an Atlanta Cutlery Officer's Model, but seeing as how I can't see the butt cap I can't tell for sure.
The A.C. Khukuri's aren't H.I. but they're not bad for what they are. They will cut and can be sharpened with a file and that makes them as good or better than the machetes found in second and third world countries.:D
I've long considered buying an A.C. Officer's Model just to play around with.;)

It appears to be a pretty well made khuk whether HI or not. I don't see how you can get hurt for that price. Even if the blade isn't hardened just right. It is a pretty nice looking knife.:)

thanks everybody for the replies, and as you have all stated, for $10 i have nothing to lose, when i recieve it, what on/about it will tell me whether or not it is an HI? thanks alot.

Kenny

Kenny there's several things thay says it's not and H.I. First of all it doesn't have the Hee Eee stamp in Devengari at the bend of the blade. The fit and finish isn't nowhere near and H.I. From what little I can see of the butt cap it apears to be flat like the H.I. and that's why I'm thinking A.C.
Next it doesn't have a Hibaki bolster. It's not even and H.I. Village model because it doesn't have the Bir Ghorka initials in Devengari at the bend.
The Sword of Shiva also tells the story. Check out the H.I.Website and check out the Sword of Shiva on the models shown there.:D

I have to agree with Yvsa on this. I don't think this is a HI knife. When it arrives see if you can find the name Windlass on the knife some where. It may not have any markings at all.

That bolster doesn't look like even the older HI blades. I don't know who you bought it from but they should have some kind of information about the knife. There have been an awful lot of khuks come from that part of the world for a long time.:) :)

I'm sure it's not HI.
Shape just doesn't look right.
I'm also -fairly- sure it's not AtlantaCutlery/WindlassSteelcrafts.
I've seen pictures of several variations of those.
There are a LOT of factories/smiths now and in the past
making all sorts of khukuris.
Some Great, Some awful, some good enough.

The bump leading to the cho does look similar to some early 20th Cent.
military issue blades that are/were often copied (as I understand).

If the handle lenth is 5", then the total length is about 19".
Yes?

Anyway. $10? Grab it!
It may be a decent blade.

If not..........

I've got several complete junkers:

Take it apart and see how it's made. Scabbard too.
Put it on the wall.
Practice sharpening.
Practice convexing the blade.
Compare it to other khukuris to learn the differences.
Practice doing patinas.
Practice polishing.
Reshape the blade for fun.

And those are just the serious suggestions.

Kenny,
That one looks like it came from Atlanta cutlery. The sheath and construction of the khukuri match to the one in my catalog. It's listed as gigantic cerimonial khukuri.
How big is the khukuri in the pic? A.C. lists theirs as being over 2 1/2 feet.
God Bless.

Thing that tipped me off was on an HI, the rings on the handle are close together. Front to rear they stay within one inch, +/- on an 18", and even on a 26" kobra it's only 1 1/4".

T.Sisco : i have no idea how big the knife is, i was just shown the picture and price, but for $10, i've really got nothing to lose..

.....and to everyone, since its not an HI kukri....i've got an excuse to get one soon..:D

Where can I find such a deal?

The last time someone offered me something for 10 bucks, it was a 5 dollar bill. :(

for a fellow forumite, here ya go, but the kuki is already mine:P:D this guys incredible, he had a VG CS Vaquero Grande for $20:eek:

I agree with what everone else has already said...$10 !!! That's a great price even if it's not an H.I. Khukuri. I'd snag that puppy in a heart beat!
