Just got this and posted the photos from the previous owner in an earlier post. After putting a great edge on it, I took it out for some playtime. Then, in the sun, the gray area really caught my eye.

Also, anyone ever drilled a thong hole?
I'm thinking it could go I between the pin and end of butt.

Thanks,

It does appear to be some sort of epoxy. I have seen people drill a hole in the pommel. I personally wouldn't do it. I didn't know they were called THONGs either.

That looks like the color of glue Buck used during that time. Yes, I think a hole could fit between the tang pin and the point of the pommel. I've installed larger pommels on Buck knives so a lanyard hole could fit in that area. DM

Yep, thong. I used to wear thongs during the summer at the pool. Guess I'm showing my age. Funny how a word can "flip-flop" like that :-)

You mean like these?

cccull, you almost did it. Those Mods are good...

DM says that the picture with the glue is a good representative of the glue Buck used to use, but I have never seen a knife that came out of the factory that sloppy. My guess is that someone tried to fix it, for whatever reason. It looks like JB Weld to me...

Lots of the mods like Buck knives. You never know when one is going to wander through.
