I've been attracted to the Extrema Ratio Desert Warfare MF2 for a while, but i cant find cant find any good info on them. The brands prices are hella, but are they worth the cash?

IMO seems over priced considering the materials. The handle on that particular model doesn't look very comfortable either.

Everything I've ever seen or read about Extrema Ratio has always said good things about the durability and toughness. They are a polarizing brand, and most designs wont fit with the general EDC users needs. I personally believe a lot better knives can be purchased for the price of an Extrema Ratio.

The quality of Extrema Ratio is good. Be careful where you buy , there are a LOT of Extrema Ratio fakes / counterfeit out there.

IMO for edc I think you would be better served with a ZT, Benchmade, or a Spyderco. Any of the top end models for these guys will still be signifigantly cheaper than the Extreme Ratio. For the cost of the knife your asking about you could even consider a Brous Blades knife.

What do you mean by Polarizing?

I wasnt really looking into it for edc. For this price range, it would have to be a knife i could carry every single day on military duty; a hard-@$$ use knife that i could use for everything for my four-year Infantry contract with the army, and use it for years after when i get out. Would an extrema ratio meet this standard? Or should i look into something else?

Look into Emerson Knives. They are less expensive than Extremas, very tough, easy to sharpen and maintain in the field, and have both combat and EDC applications. Take it from a former infantry Marine, I wish I knew about Emersons when I was in the sandbox. Thanks for your service

I'll check out emersons! And thank you for yours.

I don't know the specifics of your contract but be careful with pricey blades.. I have heard many stories off them disappearing while on deployment. My friend bought several Cold Steel Recon 1's, in different sizes and blades shapes, for his tour and they are tough as nails. The coating will come off the blade but thats no big deal. The AUS8 is very easy to sharpen in the field and is surprisingly durable thanks to good heat treat. Also if you lose it, its not the a ton of money down the drain. Just a thought based on my friends experience.

Nothing wrong with Extrema Ratio, except for the price. IMO, they are about 40% (or so) higher than what they should be. I've had a couple of their folders (Fulcrum II and MPC) and a Shrapnel. All great knives, very well made, very tough.... But very expensive. I loved the Shrapnel. Had to sell it to fund a pistol I wanted.

As has been mentioned, beware of fakes. If you really plan to get one, make sure you go through a very reputable dealer.

As an alternative you might want to check this out by Fox.
" Fox Tracker Meskwaki" Also made in Italy , they're not cheap ( about $250) , but I think they're interesting to say the least.
It can be carried as a folder or fixed blade and it includes both sheaths ( folder or fixed).

blade: stainless steel N690Co
hardness: HRC 58-60
handle: micarta green
sheath: NYLON 1000D > with MOLLE system

blade 5.31 ”
overall 12.20 ”
thickness 0.19 ”
weight 15.69 oz

The design isn't really up my alley, but that aside, that's a lot of money to spend when there are very worthy alternatives available for half the price. Consider whether you are going to be in a situation where you can ever get your money's worth out of a folding knife. If the answer is yes, then also consider if you'd be better off buying a primary and a spare for what you'd otherwise spend on just one. Should it break? No, but it could. Should it get stolen? Hopefully not, but not everyone is necessarily a team player when it comes to respecting personal property.

I've read a lot of positive comments on ER knives in terms of quality (again, not my cup of tea personally) and wouldn't doubt the knife's capabilities, but that's a car payment or a good chunk of a month's rent where I come from, and the sandbox (or wherever you're going) isn't any place for anything you care about. Odds are, there won't be a "lost and found" box.

The designs aren't really for me either. Also, they are way over priced. You can get much more for your money from the many other suggestions in this thread. If it were me Id be looking at something from ZT like the 550. For budget options it will be hard to beat that Recon 1.

I know blade hq has a few, but I also saw some on Arizona Custom Knives. Is that website legit?

I ordered from them once, but it was a very long time ago. Went off without a hitch. Never heard anything bad about them. You may want to look them up in GB&U just to be sure.

Precisely. The only "problem" with them is that some, including myself, think they are silly. But that really shouldn't matter. If you like 'em, you like 'em.

Yeah, their designs are pretty odd! Some of them resemble odd "Klingon" type stuff made by Tops or something. They really are well made though.

The first one I bought was the MPC. My hunting buddy had bought it at a gun show. He didn't use it and decided to sell it for about half of what he paid to buy a gun. I couldn't pass it up. After I held it in person and saw what a brick chithouse it was, I had to have it! I bought the Extrema Ratios I had in my heavy wheelin and dealin days.

I totally agree, you can get more for your money by going with other brands (since ER's are so expensive!), but I think the OP may be dead set on getting one.

If I was in that situation, I honestly think I'd just get 3 Recon 1's and call it a day. Probably no need to have more than 1, but it's nice to have backups. (and you could use 1 of em for trading fodder if the need arose) Plus, you could probably buy about 10 of em for the price of one of the nicer Extrema Ratios.
