hello everyone

im new to the traditional forums and thought i should start my journy here by asking a question.

i have a 1970 case slimline trapper with yellow handles and wanted to know if it used ss or cv steel31043

the model number is very worn and i can sorta make it out "31043"is what it looks like under a magnifying glass

any help would be appreciated-thanks

sorry i forgot to mention, im no good at posting pics on the forums but i can send some via email, anybody out there that i can send pics to?

I think it should be CV on that age of knife unless it's stamped as stainless/ss, which you say it isn't.

If it's from the 70's, it'll be carbon steel unless it's marked SS or SSP.

awesome, thanks guys, know all i got to do is sharpen her up and she will be ready for some cuttin

thanks again guys,
william

So far as I know, Case's 'CV' knives from that era weren't actually marked 'CV', but I think it's the same steel (assuming it's not marked with the 'SS', which would indicate stainless).

I seem to recall asking the same question, a while back. I have a 1970 Case large sodbuster (2138), which is (apparently) CV, but not actually marked so.

The pattern number says yellow composition handles material (3), 1 blade (1), and should be 048 for slim line pattern. AFAIK the blade is either CV or carbon unless SS is stamped.

The word STAINLESS would be in the tang stamp..if not its CV. Case did not make the 31048 in stainless in 1970 anyway.

If you really want to seal the deal on this one, polish up a blade, clean it off and then stick it in an apple for 30 minutes. Patina = cv

oh, i like that idea, i will see what i can do and post the results, thanks guys for being so helpful

also, any idea of what steel case uses for cv?

Currently, it is 1085 with small additions (<1%) of Chromium and Vanadium, hence the CV.

In the past (I don't know how far past) it was 1095 with similar additions of Chromium and Vanadium.

ah, thanks again. im really starting to love this place, so much information and pics of sweet blades, what more could you want?
