Is this common?

I got a beautiful Buck 55 last weekend and have carried and used it everyday since. It my become my favorite EDC...I like it that much!

However, there is one thing that has me concerned. Take a look at the blade grind, it is pretty off center.

Probably more cosmetic than anything else but has anyone else seen this?

Not sure how common it is overall, but I see knives like that a lot, especially mass produced ones.

Never had it cause a problem.

howdy fish tail!
welcome abord the buck forum!
i have a 55 and will have to dig it out ..
it is very observent of you to spot this!
good eye mate!
and your pict really is right on in showing what you are speaking of !
i would think it is a but a small cosmetic thing that may not show as much as you use it and sharpen the edge .. that said i would like to follow this as you use it to see if that happens..
this is one of those small things that is a good thing to bring to bucks attention..

The lockup is perfect with no movement in any direction. But, upon closer inspection, it looks like the uneven grind is causing the blade to be off-center when closed. Take a look...

My concern is more about the long term effect and how it wears with use and sharpening. My dad carried the same 506 in his pocket for over 20 years and it still closes perfectly centered. I'm going to give the 55 a pretty good workout today and will keep you posted.

Well, Fishtale, an uneven grind by itself is no biggie on a 'user', but after seeing your last picture, it would bug the heck out of me 'user' or not.

I would be inclined to send it to Buck, along with your excellent pics and let them make it right. You have the best warranty on the planet standing behind you, so you may as well use it.

Yes, send their mistake to them at your expense so they can make it right.

Unfortunately, they won't reimburse for your time, inconvenience and postage.

What ever happened to doing it right in the first place?

It is alive and well, defining the vast majority of Buck knives. In any mass production process, a certain number of defects are to be expected. I am unaware of any large producer of knives that is immune to that reality.

Rocinante, it must be nice to go through life making absolutely no mistakes. I envy you.

I've had one Buck with an off-center problem (along with a couple of other issues). Buck corrected the problems and did so quickly and proficiently. That's about as good as I could have asked.

My intent was not to make this into a Buck bash. I love the company and products. I was just looking for some feedback on longterm implications. I may send her back to Idaho for some fine tuning.
