Is this edge too far gone?

I have had this US marked W-V 4# kicking around the shop for a while. Its in decent shape, the poll is not mushroomed, or eye deformed, but the edge is very obtuse. Do you think its worth hafting and using? Also, I'm guessing about a 33-36" haft would be about right?

That is one thick bit. I guess Woodings-Verona must have been thinking "splitter". I would try filing it and see if it feels worth the effort to me. I would hang it later, if I liked the results of the filing.

It's definitely fixable. With one that fat I'd be taking the bevel down with a grinder. It would make for an awful lot of file work otherwise. Just watch the heat and quench, quench, quench.

Id put it into vinegar or some liquid rust remover. After a while it'll show the tempet line. So u'll have an idea if the heat treated part is grinded or does it still have any potential.

Thanx, I'm probably going to just wire wheel the paint off and do a quick pass with some ferric chloride to find the temper line. It looks like it has been "sharpened" with a bench grinder at some point in its life.

Will update when I get around to it.
