Is This Knife Possible?

Could Kershaw build a OTF knife (similar to the benchmade Infidel auto) but based on the speedsafe system? seems if the mechanics could be worked out It would be legal since You would be pushing on some part of the blade first to initiate the opening rather than a button. I think cold steel had a knife like what i am thinking of but without a torsion/ spring assist.

Just wondering.

when you take a speed safe knife apart, you will see that the torsion bar works in a "half moon" type slot. in short it rotates a little when deploying the blade, so considering how the speed safe mech is designed, it just couldnt be done. there isnt really a way of making a OTF where you have to touch the blade first (be it thumbstud or flipper) to deploy it.

honestly the closest option the Kershaw makes is the Ripcord. it isnt asisted or anything. i will let someone who owns the knife, and has more experiance explain it. the best i can describe it would be that you deploy it by the belt clip (like i said, others can explain it better).

I agree with OL that it doesn't seem too feasible, at least with the way the Speedsafe is currently constituted.

For the sake of argument though, let's say there was a way to do what you propose in terms of opening the blade. We'd still have to figure out the mechanics of closing it reliably. If you're touching part of the blade to open the knife, say a nub sticking through the handle, I wonder how big you'd have to make it so that it would be easy to manipulate with one hand, particularly when going back to its starting position. Maybe it could use a charging handle like on a Microtech Halo, but then it becomes a two-handed operation. The detent could be tricky too.

Intriguing concept though, gets the mind going.

I know it could be possible If only I had more than a two hamster power brain...

I betcha Ken onion could work it out!

Here's a clip of how the Ripcord works....

Wow, that's pretty nice. At a glance, especially with a shirt that isn't tucked in, most people probably wouldn't even recognize it as a knife.

just a note, that is the first generation ripcord. i played with one at NGK that was of the 2nd generation. there were complaints that it was dangerous to have the knife exposed when trying to put it back. it comes in a hardshell to let you extract and replace blade safely. it was cool, and i thought about picking one up. just was more focused on the ZTs that i wanted.
