Hi, just found this motor for dirt cheap and was wondering if it is adequate for a belt grinder. It says 400V but that can be changed to 240Volts through a VFD right?

Do you have 3 phase power? Otherwise, you will also need a phase converter and that probably costs just as much as an appropriate single phase motor.

If he plans to use a VFD, that will act as the phase converter, as long as it is either 1) a model specifically designed for single-phase input, or 2) a 3-phase VFD oversized enough to run properly on single-phase input.

OP, if you only have 240V single-phase power available, you can't increase that to 400V through a VFD. You would need to also have a step-up transformer to increase from 240V to 400V, then go into a 400V VFD. You could try it without the transformer, but would only be able to run the motor up to about 60% speed...above that you'd run out of voltage and lose torque. But maybe that would be enough? If not, I would abandon that motor and search for one that is 240V. Also, pay attention to the RPM. That one appears to be 14xx RPM, which means it is a 4-pole motor. A 2-pole motor will have twice the RPM, which may sound great in theory, but they also have half the torque as a 4-pole, so may not work as well as expected.

Also, this would probably be better posted in the Knife Maker's shop talk forum.
